Engineering & Asset Management Overview
Engineering & Asset Management is the strategic heart of our network, providing the technical leadership behind safe, reliable, sustainable and future-ready operations.
Our engineers combine deep technical expertise with creativity and curiosity to design, protect, fund and enhance the assets that power the nation.
From pioneering low-carbon solutions to shaping long-term asset strategies, this team attracts people who are energised by innovation, purposeful engineering and the chance to influence the UK’s transition to net zero.
Our teams help maximise asset performance and value by deploying secured funding in ways that deliver the best outcomes for consumers, stakeholders and regulators.
Asset Management shapes the long-term health, performance and value of the National Transmission System. The team develops the 10-year Asset Management Plan (AMP), ensuring investments are data-driven, risk-based and aligned with regulatory commitments. This includes setting Asset Management Objectives, producing Asset Class Strategies and maintaining ISO 55001-aligned processes.
Asset Management also provides the technical assurance behind major investment decisions, using advanced modelling to forecast asset lifecycles and ensure value for consumers. It coordinates handovers to Investment Delivery and works closely with Ofgem on RIIO-GT3 submissions and determination responses.
The function spans Asset Strategy, Planning, Modelling, Integrity and Technical Assurance, leading on data‑driven investment decisions and shaping the future capability of the gas network.
Portfolio Management
Portfolio Management gives National Gas a clear, transparent and strategically aligned view of investment activity across the network. The team oversees portfolio planning, reporting, governance and costing, helping leaders make informed decisions on operational and capital expenditure.
Portfolio Management plays a vital role in linking Asset Management planning with delivery teams, ensuring that needs cases, scopes and volumes are sequenced effectively, especially during major regulatory transitions such as switching price control periods.
Engineering Policy
Engineering Policy creates, maintains and governs the technical policies and standards that underpin how National Gas designs, operates and maintains its assets.
These policies set the engineering requirements for gas quality, metering, telemetry, safety engineering, pipelines and AGIs, rotating machinery, and environmental and sustainability compliance. The team also updates policies to future-proof the network for new molecules and technologies.
Engineering Policy leads frameworks for the hydrogen transition, including Project Union and East Coast Hydrogen, ensuring technical standards evolve to support a multi-molecule future. The team also acts as the link between engineering expertise and regulatory and safety obligations.

Hydrogen & New Products
This rapidly growing function leads the organisation’s readiness for the hydrogen transition, supporting Project Union, East Coast Hydrogen and wider national efforts to create a hydrogen-enabled gas network and includes specialists in policy, pipelines, safety, process engineering and materials.
The area develops strategic and technical capabilities required for transporting hydrogen and hydrogen blends by repurposing existing assets, developing new policies, and undertaking research and innovation into materials, integrity and operational safety.
Hydrogen & New Products is also aligned with government strategies such as Clean Power 2030, supporting National Gas’ role in delivering the UK’s transition to low‑carbon molecules.
Chief Engineer Division
The Chief Engineer Division acts as National Gas’s technical conscience, ensuring engineering excellence, safety, compliance and system integrity across the whole network. This includes governance of technical standards, incident support, process safety assurance, contractor authorisation, and oversight of engineering competence.
It brings together technical experts in electrical, mechanical, process safety, asset protection, crisis management, and engineering information management. With increasing emphasis on digital transformation and hydrogen‑readiness, the Chief Engineer Division ensures the organisation has the capabilities, standards and assurance required to operate safely and reliably.
The division is also responsible for ensuring National Gas maintains and grows engineering capability-supporting professional development, competency frameworks and succession planning.
Uncertainty Mechanisms
The Uncertainty Mechanism team secures and manages regulatory funding for major, uncertain or long-lead-time investments under the RIIO framework. We ensure National Gas can obtain additional allowances for work not fully defined at the initial funding stages, unforeseen and essential additions to delivery of projects.
These teams coordinate submissions, evidence, engineering justification papers, costings and risk assessments required by Ofgem, working closely with Asset Management, Engineering Policy, Finance and Major Programmes. UM also plays a strategic role in preparing for future price control mechanisms as the network supports new molecules and future operating models.
