About the role
Join our National Gas Services (NGS) fabrication team and build practical skills in welding, pipe fitting, and fabrication while supporting work that directly contributes to safe, reliable operations.
Working alongside experienced Welders, Pipe Fitters, and Supervisors, you’ll gain hands-on experience while following a structured development pathway towards becoming a skilled Welder or Pipe Fitter.

NGS teams provide specialist inspection, maintenance, repair, infrastructure, and emergency response services across the UK and Ireland. Behind that work is a skilled fabrication team preparing the pipework, components, and equipment our projects depend on.
As a Welders/Fitters Mate, you’ll contribute from day one while developing your technical skills. You’ll help prepare materials and pipework accurately, support fabrication and welding activities, and learn how safety, quality, and precision come together in a professional engineering environment.
What you'll be doing
- Support Welders and Pipe Fitters to prepare and assemble pipework, fabricated components, and mechanical equipment
- Prepare materials for welding through measuring, marking out, grinding, bevelling, machining, cleaning, alignment, and fit-up
- Support accurate measurement and dimensional checks for fabrication, installation, and tie-in work
- Prepare and control the tools, materials, consumables, and equipment needed for workshop and site activities
- Support inspection, testing, and quality checks under the guidance of experienced team members
- Follow safe systems of work and maintain high standards of equipment care and workshop housekeeping
- Build your welding and pipe fitting capability through practical training, mentoring, and competency development

Essential
- Practical experience within an engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, construction, or industrial environment
- Good mechanical aptitude and an interest in developing welding, fabrication, or pipe fitting skills
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment
- Basic understanding of engineering drawings, measurements, and dimensions
- Ability to follow technical instructions and work safely under supervision
- GCSEs or equivalent in English and Mathematics
- Ability to support workshop and site-based work as required
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Previous experience supporting welding, fabrication, or pipe fitting work
- Experience using cutting, grinding, drilling, or machining equipment
- Knowledge of pipework, valves, flanges, or mechanical assemblies
- NVQ Level 2 or 3, or apprenticeship experience, in a relevant engineering discipline
- Experience in utilities, gas transmission, pipelines, pressure systems, engineering, or construction
Security clearance
