Join National Gas and help be the energy behind the change.

National Gas is responsible for operating and maintaining Britain's national gas transmission network, helping to keep the lights on, businesses running and homes warm.

We manage the critical infrastructure that safely and reliably transport gas across Great Britain, supporting the energy security that millions of people depend on every day.

While delivering for Britain today, we're also preparing for tomorrow. Through innovation, investment and the development of future energy infrastructure, we're helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy system for generations to come.

As a graduate, you'll be given meaningful responsibility from the start, supported to develop professionally, and empowered to contribute to projects that have a real impact on the nation's energy future. Whether you're solving complex challenges, driving innovation or delivering essential services, you'll play an important role in an organisation with genuine purpose.

Join us and help shape the future of energy.

About the Role

Join our Policy, Engineering Maintenance & Environment (PEME) team and help shape how National Gas maintains and improves the assets that keep Britain's energy network running safely and reliably. As a Maintenance Policy Engineering Graduate, you'll play a role in supporting the standards, processes and decisions that help ensure our infrastructure continues to perform effectively.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience across a wide range of engineering and business activities. You'll work with colleagues from across National Gas, developing an understanding of how maintenance decisions are made, how asset performance is monitored and how improvements are identified and implemented.

Day-to-day, you could be:

•    Supporting projects that help improve the performance and reliability of our assets.
•    Contributing to decisions about future asset investment and maintenance activities.
•    Reviewing information and data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
•    Supporting quality reviews of new and existing assets.
•    Helping investigate and manage asset issues and defects.
•    Working on projects that improve existing policies, processes and ways of working.
•    Collaborating with colleagues across engineering, operational and project teams.
•    Contributing to major business improvement programmes, including the Keystone project.

Throughout the programme, you'll gain experience in asset management, maintenance planning, engineering assurance and continuous improvement. You'll develop strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills while building an understanding of how engineering decisions support critical national infrastructure.

About You

We're looking for someone who enjoys understanding how things work and is curious about solving real-world challenges. You'll be keen to combine analytical thinking with practical learning, using evidence and insight to help make informed decisions.

You'll be comfortable communicating with a wide range of people and able to explain information in a clear and straightforward way. You'll enjoy asking questions, learning from others, and building your understanding by getting out into the business and seeing how things work in practice.

We're looking for someone who is:

•    Curious and eager to learn
•    Able to take ownership of their work
•    Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
•    Interested in improving processes and finding better ways of working
•    Confident communicating with both technical and non-technical audiences
•    Keen to gain practical experience by visiting sites and engaging with operational teams across the business

We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation and strongly encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

What you'll need

Suitable degree subjects include:

•    Risk Management
•    Other relevant STEM-related disciplines

Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, alongside an interest in understanding how engineering and maintenance activities are delivered in practice. An interest in asset management, infrastructure, engineering systems or operational performance would also be beneficial.

A good application will include a cover letter to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Be sure to include any other relevant experience or university modules.

Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.

The Essentials

This is an 18-month fixed-term graduate programme. You must have the right to work in the UK for the duration of the programme. All participants on our Graduate Scheme are subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit GOV.UK (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).

As part of the programme, you'll have opportunities to visit operational sites and work with colleagues across the business to understand how maintenance policies and engineering standards are applied in practice. Regular travel will be required, as well as overnight stays depending on project locations and business needs. Due to the nature of the role, you'll need a full UK driving licence by the time you join the programme. Access to a vehicle would be beneficial, although not essential. Your next steps…

You'll be offered additional support and guidance throughout the application process by our Early Careers team. Eligible applications will be reviewed by a human, every step of the way.

You’re only able to apply for one of our graduate schemes, so please consider this carefully. When reviewing your application, if we feel you might be a good fit for something else, we'll be sure to let you know.

Following a successful online application, you'll be invited to complete an online assessment. Candidates who progress to the next stage will then be invited to a virtual solo interview. The final stage of the process is an in-person Assessment Centre in December or January. We'll share further details closer to the time, including the date and location.

Applications close on Sunday 8th November 2026. Each year, we receive a large volume of applications, so we'd encourage you to apply early.
