About the role

 

As an Environmental Specialist, you will be the go‑to subject matter expert for environmental compliance, sustainability, and best practice across operational sites and CDM projects. You’ll play a critical role in supporting environmental performance, improving standards, and driving behavioural change across the region. This position offers the chance to shape environmental strategy while working hands‑on with sites, projects, regulators, and internal teams. 

 

What You’ll Be Doing 

 

  • Providing expert environmental support to operational sites and construction projects. 
  • Carrying out environmental site visits, inspections, audits, and assurance activities. 
  • Leading ISO14001 certification activities and liaising with external auditors. 
  • Managing environmental procedures and contributing to environmental sustainability strategies. 
  • Preparing consent and permit applications, including licences for protected species and SSSI considerations. 
  • Advising on waste management, contaminated land, hazardous materials, and emergency planning. 
  • Supporting project delivery through review of environmental plans, RAMs, and pre‑construction information. 
  • Acting as the primary contact for environmental and sustainability matters across the region. 
  • Leading investigations into environmental incidents and emissions permit breaches. 
  • Coaching, influencing, and collaborating with stakeholders at all levels. 
  • Driving a culture of environmental sustainability awareness across sites and teams. 
  • Supporting delivery of the Environmental Action Plan (EAP) and regional KPIs. 
  • Providing training, initiatives, and continuous improvement activities to uplift capability. 

About you

You thrive in fast‑paced operational environments, can balance multiple priorities, and have a strong passion for sustainability. You bring technical expertise, a proactive mindset, and the ability to build strong, trusted relationships. 

 

Key Requirements & Experience: 

 

  • Strong technical and site‑based environmental sustainability experience, ideally with high‑pressure gas transmission assets 
  • Experience supporting Principal Contractors across varied construction projects 
  • Excellent understanding of environmental legislation, policies, and industry best practice 
  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement, coaching, and influencing across all levels 
  • Strong organisational, planning, and time management abilities 
  • Resilient, confident, and able to challenge behaviours constructively 
  • Awareness of GT&M / National Gas policies and processes (advantageous) 
  • Willingness to travel across the Scotland & North region 

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Degree in Environmental Sustainability, Environmental Science, or a related discipline (preferred) 
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a relevant construction or infrastructure environment 
  • Member of a professional body such as IEMA, ideally Chartered or working towards Chartership 
  • Full UK driving licence
