Join us, and help be the energy behind the change.
National Gas is the backbone of Britain's energy system. We're responsible for securing the UK's energy, whilst leading the way to a net-zero future.
As the operator of Britain’s national gas transmission network, we repair and maintain gas pipelines, safely and reliably delivering gas to power stations, industries and 23 million homes.
Our skilled teams work to keep the gas flowing to our customers, generating power and helping to keep everyone connected.
At the same time, we’re pioneering new solutions like hydrogen transmission to help decarbonise energy, so our infrastructure continues to power the country as it transitions to net-zero.
As a graduate joining National Gas, it’s an inspiring environment where you know your work will directly contribute to keeping the nation’s energy secure today, whilst building a more sustainable, net-zero energy system for tomorrow.
About the Role
As an Investment Management Graduate, you’ll join our Planning and Performance team. The Planning & Performance team sits at the centre of the region’s investment decision-making, working day-to-day with Delivery teams, Engineers, Asset Strategy, Finance, Regulation and Portfolio Management. You’ll get hands-on exposure to how investment decisions are shaped, challenged and approved - from early planning through to delivery and performance tracking. You’ll be involved in building investment cases, analysing portfolios, supporting forecasts and reports, and working with a wide range of stakeholders to help turn complex network needs into clear, deliverable plans.
This team covers a breadth of work, so you can expect to use your knowledge and skills across a range of planning and performance acitivites. This includes Portfolio Planning, which is all about organising and managing the work, projects, and investments the business needs to deliver - what we’re doing, when we’re doing it, and if all the moving parts line up. Another key area is Investment, which focuses on evaluating, shaping, justifying, and managing our portfolio of capital projects – the right things to spend money on, and whether the business case aligns. Our Performance team are grounded in data analytics and drawing insights, meaning the role focuses on analysing results, identifying trends, and providing interpretation. They’ll consider how we’re doing and what we need to fix or optimise.
During this 18-month programme, after your initial induction, you’ll complete three 6-month placements. This will cover various teams within the Planning and Performance team and the option of a broadening placement, so that you can be exposed to different, yet relevant experiences and skillsets that will set you up for your career. These include:
- Portfolio Planning
- Investment
- Performance
With the contacts you’ll make and the skills you’ll learn in these areas, you’ll be able to make an informed decision alongside your direct colleagues as to which area of the business you’d like to continue your career in.
