Company:  National Gas
Requisition ID:  2496

Based in Aberdeen
Course: Built Environment Graduate Apprenticeship BSc (Hons)
Programme Length: 4.5 years

Join us as a Graduate apprentice and help be the energy behind the change.

National Gas is the backbone of Britain’s energy system. We keep gas moving safely and reliably to power stations, industry and over 23 million homes while leading the way toward a net zero future. As the UK transitions to cleaner energy, we’re also pioneering solutions such as hydrogen transmission to help decarbonise the energy sector.

As a Quantity Surveying Degree Apprentice, you’ll be based in our new Aberdeen office, supporting the commercial activity that underpins the major construction, upgrade and innovation projects across our network. Alongside your role, you’ll study for a BSc in the Built Environment at Robert Gordon University, gaining academic knowledge that directly complements your work. This apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to develop professional, real world experience from day one while contributing to the secure, sustainable energy system of tomorrow.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll learn how to interpret and manage contracts, understand commercial decision making, and see first hand how we deliver complex engineering works on time and on budget. Over the course of your four and a half year apprenticeship, you’ll develop into a skilled quantity surveyor, enabling you to work toward professional chartership.

You’ll learn:

  • Fundamentals of construction
  • Cost management
  • Working with NEC4 contracts
  • Law – health, safety, negligence and effective decision making
  • Contract administration – control and finance
  • Cost planning and estimating
  • Project and financial management
  • Practical QS project work and contract practice

We’ll work closely with Robert Gordon University to review your progress at regular intervals, providing structured feedback and personalised development plans. Most of your learning will be completed on the job, supported with off the job training and one to one tutoring. Your apprenticeship concludes with a dissertation and an End Point Assessment.

About You

This apprenticeship is perfect if you’re naturally curious, eager to explore new ideas and confident enough to challenge existing ones. We’re looking for someone who’s not afraid to ask questions, bring fresh thinking to the table and share their own perspective. At National Gas, we value every individual’s unique contribution, this diversity of thought is what helps a commercial team thrive, innovate and genuinely ‘think outside the box’.

You’ll take pride in doing things well, stay proactive even when faced with new or unfamiliar challenges, and thrive on rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in. If you enjoy problem‑solving, learning from others, and being part of a team that actively shapes how major infrastructure projects are delivered, this could be the perfect place to start your career.

The Essentials

This is a 4-year fixed-term degree apprenticeship. To be considered for this scheme, you’ll need:

  • SQA Highers BBBC or equivalent qualifications.
  • National 5 pass in English and maths.
  • A cover letter is essential to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Check out our guidance below!
  • You’ll be based at our new Aberdeen office, so you’ll need to be able to commute in when required and feel comfortable being part of a collaborative, on‑site team.
  • Your role will take you out to sites across our Scotland Region, giving you valuable exposure to live projects and real‑world commercial activity. Because some of these visits may involve longer journeys or occasional overnight stays, you’ll ideally hold a full driving licence and feel confident travelling independently between locations.
  • You'll need to have permanent right to work in the UK for the entirety of this programme, as we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.
  • As you’ll be working with Critical National Infrastructure, you’ll also need to pass enhanced National Security Vetting, meaning you’ll need to be able to provide a 5-year UK address history. Your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held. Further details are available at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Studies suggest that women tend to apply only if they meet 100% of the criteria. If you resonate with our mission, the role excites you and your skills align, we encourage you to apply.

What should you include in your cover letter?

A cover letter is a chance for us to get to know you as a person – we understand you may not have workplace experience yet, and that’s absolutely fine! Let us know about your personal qualities and interests. Your cover letter should be no more than one A4 page. Make sure it includes:

  • Why you’re interested in working at National Gas.
  • What personal skills and qualities you have that would make you a great apprentice.
  • Why you want to become a Quantity Surveying Graduate Apprentice.

Your next steps…

You'll be offered support and guidance throughout the application process by our Early Careers team. Eligible applications will be reviewed by a human, every step of the way.

You’re only able to apply for one of our apprenticeship schemes, so please consider this carefully. When reviewing your application, if we feel you might be a good fit for something else, we'll be sure to let you know.

If your online application is successful, you’ll be invited to complete a virtual solo-interview. The final stage is then an in-person Assessment in Aberdeen with the team you’ll be joining, so please keep this in mind. Support is available towards travel costs if required.

Applications close on Sunday 8th March 2026.  Each year, we receive a large volume of applications, so we'd encourage you to apply early.
