About us
At National Gas, the work we do matters.
As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. Join us and help secure Britain's energy.
About the role
As an Assistant Project Manager, you'll help deliver major projects that keep Britain's gas transmission network operating safely, reliably, and securely. Working alongside experienced project leaders, you'll support the replacement of critical control systems across operational assets, helping to modernise infrastructure that plays a vital role in the UK's energy system.
This role sits within National Gas Transmission's Major Projects team and offers a genuine opportunity to develop a long-term career in project delivery while working on complex, high-value infrastructure programmes.
Why this role matters
The National Transmission System is critical national infrastructure, transporting gas across Britain to support homes, businesses, and industry. As control systems age, investment is essential to maintain reliability, strengthen resilience, and ensure the network continues to operate safely for years to come.
You'll play an important role in delivering these upgrades, helping to coordinate teams, manage project risks, and support the successful delivery of projects on live operational assets. Whether you're already working in projects or looking to transition from a technical background, your contribution will help shape infrastructure that underpins the UK's energy security.
What you’ll be doing
- Support the delivery of control system replacement projects through design, construction, commissioning, and handover
- Coordinate engineering, construction, commissioning, operations, and commercial teams to achieve project milestones
- Build strong relationships with site teams, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders
- Support project controls, including programme management, risk tracking, reporting, and governance activities
- Assist with design reviews, technical assurance activities, and CDM compliance
- Monitor contractor performance and support the administration of NEC4 contracts
- Champion safety, health, and environmental standards throughout project delivery
What you'll bring
This role would suit someone who enjoys solving problems, coordinating people, and seeing projects move from concept through to completion. It's a great opportunity for someone with an engineering, maintenance, or commissioning background who wants to build a career in major project delivery.
Essential
- Experience within engineering, maintenance, commissioning, or project environments such as energy, utilities, offshore oil and gas, or other process industries
- Strong organisation, planning, and communication skills
- Experience working with contractors, vendors, or external suppliers
- Ability to build effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders
- Understanding of health and safety requirements in industrial environments
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites across the UK
Desirable
- Experience of instrumentation and control systems, ICS/SCADA, or Operational Technology
- Exposure to functional safety standards such as IEC 61511 or industrial cyber security standards such as IEC 62443
- Experience working under permit-to-work systems in live operational environments
- Knowledge of NEC contracts
- APM, PRINCE2, HNC/HND, or equivalent engineering qualification

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit GOV.UK (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).
