About us

National Gas is securing Britain's energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

We’re looking for a Gas Operational Technology Cyber Technician with an electrical, instrumentation, or controls background to help maintain the cyber security and resilience of the National Gas Transmission System.

This is not an IT or office based cyber role.

Instead, you’ll be working hands on with industrial control systems, field equipment, networks, and OT assets across our gas terminals and Above Ground Installations (AGIs). You’ll be out on site, supporting the systems that keep Britain’s gas infrastructure running safely.

Your work helps ensure our OT equipment stays secure, reliable and compliant, directly contributing to the safe delivery of energy nationwide.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll manage and support activities that improve the cyber resilience of our operational environments, including:

  • Managing routine cyber maintenance across operational gas sites
  • Backing up configurable OT devices to support business continuity
  • Managing accurate asset data, documentation, and secure access credentials
  • Completing upgrades to meet vulnerability management requirements
  • Securely decommissioning and disposing of OT assets
  • Supporting malware sweeps and assisting with cyber incident investigations
  • Facilitating cyber assurance visits and supporting site access for upgrade projects
  • Keeping network drawings and asset records up to date
  • Working closely with central cyber teams to ensure compliance and readiness
  • Participating in an on call and standby rota once fully trained

About you

You’ll be a practical, hands‑on technician who enjoys working in operational environments. You take pride in doing things properly, have a methodical approach and bring a strong sense of ownership to your work.

You’ll bring:

  • A safety‑first mindset
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Confidence working independently and as part of a team
  • A proactive approach and willingness to develop specialist skills in OT cyber

Key requirements & experience

Essential

  • BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3) in instrumentation, electrical/electronic or cyber security discipline
  • Time‑served apprenticeship (or recognised training scheme) in instrumentation or electrical/electronic engineering or cyber security
  • Previous hands‑on experience in instrumentation, electrical/electronic maintenance, or control systems within an operational or industrial environment
  • Full UK car driving licence

Desirable

  • Cyber security training or recognised OT/ICS modules
  • Experience managing firewalls, managed switches or networked field devices
  • Experience taking OT backups or working with PLCs, RTUs or instrumentation systems
  • Familiarity with OT maintenance procedures and operational sites
  • Experience maintaining instrumentation and scheduling work activities
  • Ability to analyse problems and interpret engineering drawings

Security clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.

Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
