About the role

As a Shift Officer, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of a gas terminal, enabling the throughput of gas flow nominations from Supplier Terminals, Shippers, and Delivery Facility Operators into the national transmission system. This is a dynamic operational role working on a 7-week shift pattern, consisting of 7-day shifts, 7-night shifts, and 7-day work days. 

What you'll be doing

  • Coordinate with the Gas Network Control Centre, Supplier Terminals, Shippers, and Delivery Facility Operators to manage gas flow nominations in line with procedures and agreements.
  • Respond to gas quality issues and breaches, and act on Terminal Flow Advice notices.
  • Lead safe work practices by authorising permission documents, overseeing operations, and conducting incident investigations.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and support commissioning of new assets and project works.
  • Contribute to emergency and safety planning, acting as Incident Controller and Site Main Controller when required.
  • Protect terminal assets and systems, monitor third-party work, and authorise procedures to ensure safety and continuity.
  • Support routine maintenance and identify opportunities for equipment upgrades, preparing business cases and offering technical input.

You'll take pride in promoting a positive safety culture and driving operational excellence through teamwork and accountability.

Key requirements & experience

  • Time-served apprenticeship (or other recognised Training Scheme) in a mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, safety, or operations discipline
  • Skilled in fault diagnosis and maintenance within the Oil & Gas or similar process industries
  • Understanding of equipment used in hazardous areas and safe systems of work
  • Familiarity with systems and equipment across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Strong knowledge of Health & Safety and discipline-specific legislative requirements
  • Ability to safely isolate, decommission, and re-commission plant and equipment
  • Strong background in control of work systems
  • IOSH Managing Safely
  • Experience with terminal plant and equipment, including compressor units, gas blending, flow control, and gas quality systems - desirable
  • OPITO-approved Control Room Operator - desirable
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate - desirable
  • Full UK car driving licence

Security clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
