Terminal Engineer
£53,500 to £62,500 plus:
- Up to 6% annual bonus
- Up to 10% additional earnings through overtime and standby

About the role
You’ll lead and manage terminal operations at an Upper Tier COMAH site, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient 24/7/365 running of critical gas infrastructure. Through strong leadership, operational excellence and continuous improvement, you’ll make sure the terminal meets all regulatory, System Operator and customer requirements while maintaining the highest standards of safety, environmental protection and performance.
What you’ll be doing
- Manage and develop a 24/7 operational team, driving safety, compliance and continuous improvement
- Oversee safe control of operations (SCO), undertaking incident investigations and safety/technical inspections, and authorising permission documents
- Act as Incident Controller/Site Main Controller during planned and emergency events
- Support maintenance, commissioning, de‑commissioning and fault resolution of plant and equipment
- Enable safe delivery of capital projects and new asset commissioning
- Provide accurate asset condition information for future investment planning
- Manage operational budgets and resources
- Liaise with regulators, emergency services and local authorities
- Ensure all safety‑critical and human‑factors competencies are maintained
About you
You’ll be an experienced operational leader who thrives in a safety‑critical, highly regulated environment. You’ll bring strong decision‑making, excellent people leadership and a commitment to safe, reliable and efficient operations.
Key requirements & experience
Essential
- Minimum HNC (or equivalent) in an mechanical, maintenance, or operational discipline
- IOSH Managing Safely
- Strong knowledge of COMAH, PSSR, GS(M)R, DSEAR and related regulations
- Technical understanding of high‑pressure gas transmission assets and terminal operations
- Experience with SCO/91, SCO/94 and EL/96, or ability to gain authorisation (Safe Control of Operations / Safey System of Work SSoW / Permits Control)
- Proven leadership in high‑hazard operational environments
- Strong stakeholder, communication and influencing skills
- Experience managing budgets, resources and performance
- Full UK car driving licence
Desirable
- Working towards IEng status
- Experience with unions and H&S representatives
- Experience in shift operations or safety‑critical competency frameworks
- Background supporting capital project delivery on COMAH sites
Security clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
