Energy Transition Development Engineer
£53,500 to £62,500 plus:
- Up to 6% annual bonus

*Subject to meeting business mileage requirements, you’ll have access to a vehicle for business use during your probation period. Once probation has been successfully completed, and provided the required business mileage thresholds are met, you’ll be eligible to order a company car. Full details of mileage thresholds and vehicle eligibility will be provided during the onboarding process.
Flexible UK location with weekly travel to Ambergate (Derby)
This is a UK‑based role with travel required across our operational sites. You’ll attend our Ambergate office a minimum of one day per week, with approximately two additional days per week spent travelling to other sites as required.
Our current sites include Ambergate, Birmingham, Cardiff, Hitchin, Glasgow and Warrington. While you can be based anywhere in the UK, the ability to travel regularly and flexibly is essential for this role.

About the role
You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping National Gas Services future in hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). Working at the intersection of engineering, innovation and commercial strategy, you’ll lead the technical development of new low‑carbon opportunities and support the repurposing of the gas transmission network to enable the UK’s energy transition.
Supporting the Future Energy Operation Lead, you’ll assess viability, scope and commercial potential across emerging hydrogen and CCUS markets, collaborating closely with internal delivery teams and a wide range of external stakeholders.
What you’ll be doing
- Support the development and winning of new work across hydrogen and CCUS opportunities, contributing technical insight bids, proposals, and early-stage commercial discussions
- Manage engineering feasibility and viability assessments for repurposing National Gas Transmission assets, including work linked to Project Union (hydrogen backbone)
- Produce and review engineering documentation such as P&IDs, specifications, risk assessments, datasheets and feasibility studies
- Support FEED and detailed design phases, ensuring technical and performance alignment
- Lead and contribute to key project forums including HAZIDs, HAZOPs, FPSAs and progress reviews
- Ensure engineering work meets relevant industry standards, safety legislation and company governance
- Support commissioning activities, safe operating procedures and emergency response planning
- Build a strong understanding of the hydrogen and CCUS ecosystem, policy landscape and market dynamics
- Identify and develop unlicensed commercial opportunities, helping grow sustainable revenue streams
- Act as an ambassador for NGS, strengthening stakeholder relationships and positioning our capabilities in the market
- Work collaboratively across engineering, commercial and leadership teams to deliver high‑quality outcomes

You’ll bring a strong engineering background with the confidence to operate in fast‑moving, emerging markets. You’re comfortable leading technical conversations, influencing a wide range of stakeholders, and balancing engineering rigour with commercial insight. You’ll enjoy shaping new opportunities, working through ambiguity, and contributing to a high‑performing, collaborative team.
Key requirements & experience
Essential
- Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent practical engineering experience
- Strong engineering and asset management background within infrastructure or energy environments
- Sound understanding of engineering policy, statutory regulations and safety requirements for transmission assets
- Proven experience managing technical projects, including scope, cost, schedule and risk
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills across technical and non‑technical audiences
- Experience with cost control, forecasting and reporting on complex projects
- Full UK car driving licence
Desirable
- Experience contributing to or supporting the development and winning of new work, bids or proposals within an engineering, infrastructure or energy environment
- Experience working with hydrogen and/or CCUS infrastructure or related low‑carbon technologies
- Project management qualification or significant project delivery experience
- Exposure to FEED, detailed design and asset repurposing programmes
- Experience operating in regulated energy or utilities environments
