This is a site‑based role (five days a week), involving regular travel across the UK (approximately 50% of the time), with occasional flexibility to work from home where appropriate.
About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
National Gas Services (NGS) provide world‑class customer service across the UK and Ireland, and are a one-stop shop for pipeline inspection, maintenance, repair and emergency response services, combining over 45 years’ experience, in‑house expertise and a nationwide depot network. NGS provides a complete, rapid‑response solution for gas transmission and distribution operators.
About the role
If you’re an experienced NDT specialist who enjoys being hands‑on and setting the technical standard, this could be right up your street.
As a Senior Pipeline Inspector, you’ll provide technical leadership and inspection expertise across gas transmission and infrastructure projects that genuinely matter. You’ll be the go‑to person for all things NDT - making sure inspections are done right, standards are met, and safety and asset integrity always come first.
This is not a welding engineering role, but you’ll need a solid understanding of welding to effectively inspect and advise.
What you'll be doing
You’ll be right at the centre of inspection activity, including:
- Delivering and overseeing high‑quality NDT inspections across construction, maintenance and integrity works
- Writing, reviewing and approving NDT procedures, techniques and inspection instructions
- Acting as the technical authority for NDT, advising project teams, contractors and stakeholders
- Reviewing contractor documentation and resolving technical queries, deviations and non‑conformances
- Leading, supporting and mentoring an inspection team
- Supporting audits, driving continuous improvement and sharing lessons learned
About you
You’ll be someone who’s confident in your technical capability and comfortable leading from the front. You enjoy solving problems, influencing others, and being trusted as a subject matter expert. You’re happy balancing hands‑on inspection with guiding teams, improving standards and keeping work compliant in a highly regulated environment.
Key requirements & experience

- Strong background in NDT inspection within regulated or safety‑critical industries
- Practical experience with RT, UT / PAUT, and surface inspection techniques (MPI, DPI)

- Relevant NDT certifications (e.g. PCN, CSWIP or equivalent)
- HNC (or equivalent) in an engineering or technical discipline
- Good understanding of inspection requirements for welded components
- Experience working to national and international codes, standards and ISO 9001
- Confident communicator with experience supporting or leading inspection teams
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Experience within gas transmission, pipelines or pressure systems
- Knowledge of coatings, painting systems and associated inspections
- Audit, quality or safety qualifications (e.g. ISO auditor, IOSH, NEBOSH, CDM)
- Working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent
