About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
We're looking for a skilled technician with mechanical engineering experience to join our field operations team, supporting the safe and efficient running of the UK and Ireland's gas transmission network. Based primarily at our Birmingham site, this hands-on role involves delivering specialist services such as under pressure drilling, flow stopping, valve repair, recompression, and in-line inspection on high-pressure pipelines, above-ground installations, and compressor stations.
You’ll be responsible for installing, commissioning, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems and equipment, often in challenging environments. This includes working within Safe Systems of Work, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring all tools, vehicles, and equipment meet legislative standards through proper maintenance, testing, and calibration.
What you'll be doing
- Carrying out mechanical operations including pressure systems, pipe fitting, and damage assessment.
- Interpreting technical requirements and collaborating with engineers to plan and execute jobs.
- Using digital systems to record working time, materials, and job progress.
- Supporting depot-based activities such as developing new techniques and assisting with safety inspections.
- Participating in a standby rota once fully trained, typically 1 in every 4.
- Occasionally working away from home across the UK and Ireland, depending on job requirements.
About you
You'll be a practical, multi-skilled problem solver with hands-on experience in mechanical operations. You'll take pride in doing things safely and right the first time, and you’re confident interpreting technical information and working collaboratively with others. Ideally, you'll have experience in pressure systems, pipe fitting, or damage assessment. You'll be comfortable using digital tools to manage job records and contribute to continuous improvement.
Key requirements & experience
- Time-served apprenticeship (or other recognised training scheme) in a mechanical discipline (or relevant experience in flow stopping)
- BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3) in a mechanical discipline (or relevant experience in flow stopping)
- Worked in industries including (but not limited to) FMCG, the broader utilities, military or aviation
- Practical experience of working on below 7Bar pressure systems - desirable
- Appreciation of systems and equipment associated with other engineering disciplines within the oil and gas (or other similar process) industry - desirable
- Full UK car driving licence
