National Gas is securing Britain’s energy.  We are responsible for transporting gas to power stations, major industries, storage facilities, and more than half a million businesses and 24 million homes through nearly 5,000 miles of pipes across Britain. National Gas is also proud to lead the way in transforming the energy network for a clean energy future.

The Physical Security Technician ensures the protection of critical infrastructure and assets through the deployment and maintenance of physical security technologies.  This role involves IT Networking - configuring, managing and integrating software systems and hardware devices to keep our operational sites secure.

These technologies are installed on sites and managed from a central control point using a standalone, separate Technology network within System Engineering. The role focuses on deterring, detecting, and delaying threats, while acting as a conduit between site operations, security control centres, contractors, and the wider security team.

Join us, and help be the energy behind the change.

About the role:

1). Installation, Configuration & Maintenance of Security Technologies:

  • Lead the end-to-end deployment of physical security systems—including access control, CCTV, intrusion detection, and alarm systems.
  • Integration of physical security devices and control systems (door and gate controls, access card readers, electric fences, CCTV) into the standalone control and management technology network. This includes integrating disparate systems into management software for centralised control and management of physical security at sites.
  • Technology system optimisation, component level diagnosis, firmware updates, system health assessments.
  • Maintain asset inventories, configuration documentation, and maintenance logs to ensure full auditability and lifecycle traceability.

2). Incident Response & Operational Support:

  • Technical specialist during high priority incidents, participating in standby rotas and responding to callouts.
  • Technical investigations following system failures, alarms, or suspected security breaches; gather system evidence, extract log data, and contribute technical findings
  • Support SOC, field operators, and site security teams by validating alerts, verifying system statuses, and restoring service in time critical situations.
  • Liaise with engineering teams to escalate complex technical issues requiring specialist remediation or vendor escalation.

3). Compliance, Standards & Quality Assurance - follow internal security engineering standards, documented design principles, and security architectures, whilst maintaining compliance with relevant frameworks (e.g. ISO 27001, BS EN standards, and sector specific security obligations such as those relevant to critical national infrastructure).  Technical quality assurance checks on contractor installations, ensuring workmanship, configuration, and documentation.

4). Stakeholder & Vendor Engagement - work collaboratively with internal teams (Security Engineering, Field Force Operations, SOC, and site operations) and coordinate with external vendors, integrators, and service contractors to oversee scheduled works, validate deliverables, and ensure adherence to technical specifications.

5). User Training and Frontline Support – deliver training to system users; develop user guides and training content to support consistent and safe operation of deployed technologies.  Provide troubleshooting support for users to manage basic faults.
