As an Engineering Degree Apprentice you’ll be based out of our Bristol office, whilst travelling to sites across the region to see major engineering projects in action. You’ll study for your degree at Aston University while gaining hands on experience with the gas transmission network’s electrical systems. You’ll work on real operational sites and large scale engineering projects from day one. It’s an environment where your work will directly contribute to keeping the nation’s energy secure today and shaping a cleaner, more sustainable system for tomorrow.

What you’ll be doing

A degree apprenticeship is a great choice if you want to earn a degree while gaining real experience on major engineering projects. You’ll split your time between university study, specialist training and hands on experience at operational sites such as compressor stations and terminals. You’ll support the maintenance and operation of electrical systems that keep the gas transmission network running safely and reliably, including helping with diagnostics, testing, equipment checks and basic fault finding under supervision. You’ll also gain exposure to control and instrumentation systems, learning how sensors, monitoring equipment and control logic support the wider network.  

You’ll be involved in real engineering projects from the start, supporting surveys, data gathering, documentation, and small technical tasks that feed into upgrades and improvements across the network. You’ll build the skills, safety knowledge and confidence needed for a long term engineering career. You’ll work closely with mechanical, electrical and control teams, giving you a rounded understanding of how major energy infrastructure is designed, maintained and developed.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll build a wide range of skills, from technical engineering knowledge to project management, planning, problem solving and communication. At university you’ll study subjects like:

• Professional engineering practice and engineering management
• Digital engineering
• Engineering mathematics and mathematical methods in engineering
• Industrial plant engineering
• Thermo-fluid sciences
• Sustainable Engineering
• Control systems and instrumentation
• Elective modules

We’ll work closely with Aston University to review your progress regularly, give you feedback and support your development. You’ll follow a personalised training plan, combining on the job learning, dedicated training days and one to one coaching. Your apprenticeship will finish with a dissertation and an End Point Assessment, giving you a professionally recognised qualification and real experience to launch your career.

The Essentials

This is a 4-year fixed-term degree apprenticeship. To be considered for this scheme, you’ll need:

•    Three A Levels at CCC or above including a Mathematics based subject and a STEM subject, or equivalent BTECs.
•    Have a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above including Mathematics, English and a science, technology or engineering related subject.
•    A cover letter is essential to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Check out our guidance below!
•    Our sites are located across the UK, so you’ll need to be comfortable with travel and overnight stays. This means that you’ll need to have a driving license by the time you would be joining us (September 2026!).
•    You'll need to have permanent right to work in the UK for the entirety of this programme, as we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role. 
•    As you’ll be working on Critical National Infrastructure, you’ll also need to pass enhanced National Security Vetting, meaning you’ll need to be able to provide a 5-year UK address history. Your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held. What should you include in your cover letter?

A cover letter is a chance for us to get to know you as a person – we understand you may not have workplace experience yet, and that’s absolutely fine! Let us know about your personal qualities and interests. Your cover letter should be no more than one A4 page. Make sure it includes:

•    What personal skills and qualities you have that would make you a great apprentice
•    Why you want to become an Engineering Degree Apprentice. This could be anything from an interest in engineering or practical, hands‑on activities to enjoying science and how things work.
