About us

At National Gas, we don’t just operate infrastructure, we enable the country to function.

Every day, our network keeps energy moving to millions of homes, businesses, and industries across Britain. It’s work that is complex, high-stakes, and deeply consequential.
As the UK transitions towards net zero, our role becomes even more critica, balancing security, performance, and transformation at national scale.

About the role

Some roles shape strategy. Others deliver it. This role does both and holds accountability for the result.

As Head of Strategic Performance & Strategy, you will take ownership of performance across a £450m+ operational landscape, operating at the point where critical decisions are made and real outcomes are delivered.

This is not a role for someone who wants to advise from a distance. It is for a leader who wants to step into the engine room of a complex organisation, take hold of its biggest challenges, and drive measurable change through to completion.

You will define direction, build the systems that enable execution, and ensure results are delivered and sustained.

What makes this role compelling is simple: your impact will be visible, material, and enduring.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Taking full ownership of performance, identifying and unlocking improvements across cost, delivery, risk, and asset reliability
  • Turning ambition into execution, translating strategy into clear plans and leading delivery end-to-end
  • Leading major transformation programmes, not just designing them, but ensuring benefits are realised and sustained
  • Building the operating backbone of the organisation, from governance to performance frameworks to decision-making structures
  • Creating clarity at scale, ensuring teams understand priorities, accountability, and how results are delivered
  • Redesigning how work gets done, embedding efficiency, resilience, and consistency into core processes
  • Driving pace and accountability, setting high standards and ensuring they are met
  • Influencing senior leadership with confidence, shaping decisions that materially impact the organisation
  • Cutting through complexity, turning insight into action and momentum

Key requirements

Essential:

  • A background in management consultancy or a similarly high-performance environment, with a proven ability to deliver, not just advise
  • A track record of leading large-scale, complex transformation programmes with measurable impact
  • The ability to operate and influence at senior and executive level
  • Experience owning problems from diagnosis through to embedded change
  • Strong analytical and structuring capability, with the ability to bring clarity to ambiguity
  • Expertise in operating models, process design, and performance improvement
  • Experience building governance, delivery frameworks, and performance infrastructure
  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills, particularly with senior stakeholders

Desirable:

  • Experience in asset-intensive or regulated sectors (energy, utilities, infrastructure)
  • Exposure to asset performance, investment planning, or financial frameworks
  • Experience within regional or distributed operational models
  • A career spanning both consulting and in-house leadership

Why Apply?

This is the kind of role that fundamentally changes the trajectory of a career. It offers the opportunity to move from advising to truly owning outcomes at scale, delivering transformation that is not only designed but implemented, embedded, and measurable. You’ll operate with genuine executive visibility and influence, shaping performance across nationally critical infrastructure while building a legacy defined by impact rather than recommendations. If you’re looking for a role where your work drives real, tangible change, and where you can see the results of your decisions play out across an entire organisation, this is that opportunity.
