About us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

We’re looking for a driven Electrical Operations Technician to join our East area operations team. You’ll help keep our gas transmission network safe and reliable by carrying out maintenance, fault-finding, and repairs across electrical, control and instrumentation systems.

This is a hands-on, site-based role with a strong operational focus. As well as core technical duties, you will play an important part in the stewardship of critical site assets, including compressor-related plant, helping to ensure equipment is maintained, monitored, and managed to a high standard.

The role also supports the safe coordination of on-site activities, working closely with colleagues, contractors, and delivery partners to maintain safety, reliability, and site standards. This includes supporting the effective control of work on a live operational site.

We’re looking for someone who brings strong technical ability, sound judgement, attention to detail and a practical team-focused approach. You’ll be expected to take ownership, work collaboratively with others, and contribute positively to day-to-day site operations.

What you’ll be doing

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance on electrical systems, with some work across instrumentation and control equipment
  • Diagnose and repair faults to minimise downtime
  • Calibrate, test, and maintain instrumentation to meet operational standards
  • Support installation, commissioning, and modifications of E&I equipment
  • Act as steward for key site assets, including compressor-related plant, supporting high standards of asset care, monitoring, defect identification, and follow-through
  • Take ownership of asset condition, highlighting risks, recurring issues and improvement opportunities that could affect safety, reliability, or performance
  • Always Work safely, following company policies, industry regulations, and on-site safety procedures
  • Keep accurate maintenance and operational records
  • Support planned shutdowns, emergency repairs, and day-to-day site operations
  • Support the safe coordination of on-site activities, including inspections, contractor oversight and monitoring third-party works
  • Support the control of work on site, including safe systems of work, isolations, work planning, and adherence to permit-to-work procedures
  • Work closely with colleagues, contractors, and visitors to ensure site activities are carried out safely, professionally and efficiently
  • Contribute to the safe integration of new assets and assist in emergency or security procedures when required
  • Participate in a standby rota once fully trained, typically 1 week in every 4 or 5, responding to operational faults and plant issues as required

About you

You’ll be a safety-conscious engineering technician with a strong commitment to operational excellence, asset standards, and safe site operations.

You’ll bring strong technical discipline and attention to detail, while also recognising the need to keep work moving and support the wider operation.

You’ll be collaborative, approachable, and comfortable working with colleagues, contractors, and visitors in a busy operational environment. You’ll take pride in the site and its assets, show ownership when issues arise and bring a positive, energetic approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

You’ll be someone who can balance compliance, quality, and pace, using sound judgement to know when to challenge, when to escalate and when to act. You’ll also bring a calm and capable presence to emergency situations.
