About the Role

As a Telemetry Engineer, you’ll work closely with project delivery teams, internal stakeholders, system integrators and suppliers to provide client-side technical support across a wide range of equipment including control, instrumentation, telemetry communications, functional safety and cyber security across the full design, build and operational lifecycle. 

You will also be involved in hands on technical activities such as fault finding, root cause analysis, commissioning support, testing, configuration changes and operational troubleshooting. This helps ensure our systems remain safe, reliable and fully available across the network. 

Your projects will vary from supporting the delivery of Ofgem RIIO3 investments, to supporting customer connections, as well as contributing to innovation and research to ensure our Telemetry and Instrumentation remain fit for purpose for the future needs of the network. 

In this specialist role, you’ll play a key part in ensuring strategic direction, compliance with legislation, industry standards and National Gas policies, procedures and specifications. 

What You'll Do

• Coordinate and resolve technical issues raised by internal and external stakeholders as the asset owner. 

• Provide quality assurance and engineering design management throughout all delivery phases across multiple projects. 

• Lead, deliver and manage self-driven projects in operational environments, including facilitating risk assessments, perimetry and safe systems of work where required. 

• Support site operations teams with technical expertise to maintain availability of plant and equipment on the network. 

• Participate in process safety assessments, design reviews, quality checks and inspection activities. 

• Witness Factory and Site Acceptance Tests, Pre Commissioning and Commissioning to ensure installations and performance meet specifications. 

• Contribute to technical working groups to develop, review and implement National Gas strategies, policies and specifications, embedding best practice and innovation. 

• Support audits, inspections and implementation of the National Gas Quality Management System. 

• Provide technical input to project scopes, tenders, evaluations and risk assessments.

About You

We're looking for a proactive and technically capable engineer who can provide expert support across the full lifecycle of telemetry, control and instrumentation systems. You'll be confident managing technical issues, working collaboratively with project teams and operational stakeholders, and providing engineering assurance from design through to commissioning and operation. With a strong focus on safety, quality and continuous improvement, you'll play a key role in maintaining critical network assets while supporting innovation and future investment projects.

Essential

• HNC or Degree in a relevant engineering discipline. 

• Experience in engineering design, maintenance or operation in complex or safety critical environments. 

• Strong working knowledge of:  

• • Telemetry systems, control and instrumentation, and SCADA 

• • An appreciation of fire and gas detection and hazardous area instrumentation. 

• • An appreciation of regulations such as DSEAR and NIS. 

• • Industry standards including BS EN 60079, 61511 and 62443. 

• Working understanding of health, safety and environmental legislation. 

• Ability to participate in process safety assessments, design reviews and quality assurance activities. 

• Experience supporting operational teams with technical issues on plant and equipment. 

• Strong customer focus and stakeholder management capability. 

• Proactive approach to continuous improvement and performance excellence. 

• Commercial and financial awareness relevant to project delivery. 
  
  

Desirable

• Prior experience and knowledge of working within the Gas Industry. 

• Experience with flow control valves, metering, gas quality and serial communications. 

• Member of a professional engineering institution and or working toward IEng or CEng registration. 

• Relevant certifications such as:  

• • TUV Functional Safety Engineer or Expert 

• • CompEx EX1-4, EX12 and/or EX14 

• • IEC 62443 Cyber Security or GIAC GICSP 

• • IOSH, NEBOSH or similar 

• Experience contributing to technical working groups, policy development or creation of engineering standards. 

• Familiarity with sustainability considerations in design. 

• Experience with audits, inspections and Quality Management System implementation. 
• Experience providing technical input to tenders, scopes of work and risk assessments.
