About Us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the Role:

As a Planner, you’ll provide expert planning support across the full lifecycle of pipeline projects - from development and tendering through to construction.

You’ll ensure consistent application of planning processes to deliver reliable outputs, enabling accurate data capture and performance reporting.

Your role will involve detailed programme planning, including critical path and float analysis, earned value management, and the use of leading indicators to identify and mitigate risks. These insights will support the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget.

You’ll work closely with the Project Manager to ensure programme compliance and provide actionable recommendations following month-end reviews. You’ll also lead the analysis of planning variances - using trackers, site visits, and performance assessments - to inform decisions that drive continuous improvement in delivery performance.

What You'll be Doing:

  • Develop and maintain cost-loaded, quality-assured programmes aligned with the capital plan.
  • Own all planning elements including integrated schedules, critical paths, and contractor programmes.
  • Ensure contractor programmes remain compliant throughout delivery.
  • Apply earned value and cost-loading principles for accurate reporting and unit cost tracking.
  • Maintain a consistent project baseline and assess impacts of changes or early warnings.
  • Validate supply chain progress through design reviews and site visits.
  • Support regulatory reporting and Ofgem re-openers.
  • Lead monthly reviews of live programmes and coordinate planning sessions across projects.
  • Manage site conflict reviews, compressors, pipelines and 4-week look-ahead schedules.
  • Create and maintain regulatory period plans through FY26-FY31 and beyond.
  • Coordinate monthly PRM sessions and support forecast preparation.

About You:

You’re someone who enjoys bringing structure and clarity to complex projects. You’ve got a good eye for detail and a knack for spotting risks before they become issues. Whether it’s building out a programme from scratch or helping a team stay on track, you’re confident using planning tools and techniques to make things run smoothly.

You’re comfortable working with data and turning it into useful insights — earned value, critical paths, and performance metrics aren’t just buzzwords to you, they’re part of how you help projects succeed. You’re also a great communicator who knows how to collaborate with different teams, from contractors to project managers, and you’re happy to get out on site when needed.

Most importantly, you care about doing things the right way. You’re curious, open to feedback, and always looking for ways to improve how things are done — for yourself and the wider team.
