National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

Are you ready to lead the planning of one of the UK’s most ambitious energy investment programmes?

This is your opportunity to shape how a multi-million-pound regional portfolio is planned and delivered under RIIO-GT3. You’ll be at the centre of balancing investment priorities, regulatory requirements and network access constraints — finding practical ways to deliver a challenging, high-value programme that keeps the gas transmission system safe and resilient.

Success in this role isn’t just about managing plans — it’s about leadership. You’ll take ownership of tough decisions, bring clarity where priorities compete, and build trusted relationships across the business and with the System Operator. At the same time, you’ll develop and lead a team of planners, creating a culture that combines technical rigour with strategic thinking.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the planning and optimisation of investment and outage portfolios across your region.
  • Developing integrated short- and long-term plans that balance delivery constraints with regulatory outputs.
  • Managing outage schedules and engaging with the System Operator to resolve conflicts.
  • Taking ownership of portfolio decisions and escalating only where appropriate.
  • Leading and developing a high-performing planning team, embedding data-driven decision making and strategic thinking.

What we are looking for

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Proven leadership experience and the ability to develop people while influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of outage planning in a regulated utility, energy, or infrastructure environment.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills – able to build trusted relationships and resolve conflicts constructively.
  • Familiarity and experience with planning tools such as Primavera P6, MS Project, or equivalent systems.
  • Understanding of regulatory frameworks (such as RIIO or equivalent).

If you’re ready to take charge of outage and investment planning in a purpose-driven, fast-paced environment, we’d love to hear from you.

What we can offer you

  • Annual bonus of 15% based on personal and company performance
  • Company car
  • 28 days’ holiday plus statutory holidays - option available to buy extra or sell days
  • Double-match pension scheme - for every £1 you put in, we'll add £2 (max company contribution 12%)
  • Opt-In flexible benefit scheme, including salary sacrifice private healthcare, dental insurance, technology plans and more
  • Financial protection with 10x salary death in service and financial support if you're unable to work due to long term illness or injury
  • Excellent family friendly provisions - maternity/paternity/adoption/surrogacy/shared parental leave
  • Career progression, professional training and development – including access to LinkedIn Learning
  • Employee assistance programme offering free confidential professional counselling 24/7
  • Financial support to help you cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions
