About the role:

 

The UK energy system is at a pivotal point: the transition to net-zero by 2050 is reshaping the energy landscape, with Hydrogen, Biomethane & Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) expected to play a pivotal role in decarbonising industry and infrastructure. At the same time, geopolitical events are driving a heightened interest in energy security. As the backbone of the UK energy system, National Gas’ network is a key part of any solution, making it central to delivering secure, resilient, and decarbonised energy.

 

The Insight & Business Development (BD) Manager leads the development of customer, stakeholder, competitor, and market intelligence across the UK and Europe. The role ensures that National Gas has the knowledge and insight required to identify and develop opportunities, manage risks, and shape future infrastructure and commercial strategies.

 

The Insight & BD Manager also leads programmes of work designed to strengthen National Gas’ competitive position and maximise returns across all activities and molecules, both regulated and unregulated. This includes leading on portfolio management, supporting project development and improving business performance and productivity by embedding data-led analysis and first principles thinking into decision-making. By combining quantitative analysis, customer insight and market intelligence, the role provides strategic recommendations that inform National Gas' long-term business development activities, regulatory positioning, investment decisions, and executive decision-making.  

 

Key accountabilities:

 

Lead a team of three and the development and delivery of customer, market, competitor and stakeholder insight across the UK and Europe to support National Gas' business objectives and identify risks, opportunities and strategic implications for National Gas, through the following activities:

 

  • Ownership of key customer and stakeholder intelligence processes including satisfaction surveys, insight reporting and analysis, business intelligence dashboards

 

  • High-quality analysis, models, and strategic recommendations to the Executive and Senior Leadership Team to inform decision-making and prioritisation across the development of natural gas, hydrogen, biomethane, CCS, and the wider energy markets.

 

  • Own and manage the business development opportunity pipeline, driving identification and prioritisation of new opportunities through market scanning and early decision-gates.

 

  • Lead early-stage opportunities from conception through to investment case development, working closely with other Business Development Managers.

 

  • Develop and lead programmes of work assessing the commercial viability, economics, strategic alignment and customer demand associated with projects across all molecules and drive projects towards delivery by providing robust analyses, scenario modelling, evidence, and recommendations.

 

  • Support competitive bid processes, regulatory submissions and funding applications through the provision of market intelligence, customer evidence and strategic analysis.

 

  • Collaborate with business development, strategy, regulation, commercial and technical teams to convert complex information into clear and actionable insights.

 

  • Lead external engagement activities with customers, regulators, government bodies, industry groups and European market participants to obtain market intelligence, develop propositions, explore market opportunities, and influence strategic and policy outcomes.

 

About you:

 

Essential:

 

  • Significant experience distilling complex technical, commercial, and market problems and solutions into clear strategic messaging and recommendations and insight to senior leaders and executives.

 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with experience turning complex quantitative and qualitative datasets into clear solutions.

 

  • Ability to define ambiguous questions, build the right level of analysis, and deliver answers through clear strategic reporting, and narrative writing.

 

  • Strong commercial awareness and understanding of market drivers, customer behaviours and competitive environments taking into account risk-reward dynamics.

 

  • Experience managing and developing a team to deliver robust analyses and recommendations.

 

  • Advanced Excel, PowerPoint and data visualisation skills, including experience using analytical tools such as Power BI or similar platforms.

 

  • Experience leading complex pieces of work with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.

 

  • Strong communication, presentation and stakeholder engagement skills.

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in quantitative field or equivalent professional experience

 

Desirable:

 

  • Experience within the energy, utilities, infrastructure or regulated sectors.

 

  • Knowledge of hydrogen, biomethane, CCS, natural gas or wider energy markets.

 

  • Experience supporting regulatory submissions, business cases or competitive bid processes.

 

  • Understanding of UK and European energy policy and regulatory frameworks.

 

  • Experience using AI tools to improve productivity and enhance research and analytical capabilities.

 

  • Knowledge of Power BI for developing interactive dashboards and visualisation.
