Operations Engineer - EC&I and Mechanical
Location: (Onsite) Wormington, Broadway - Within 1.5h Commute
Salary: Paying Up to £65,000 (+ overtime & bonus)
About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
We’re looking for a technically skilled and safety-focused Operations Engineer to join and lead our Operations team on site at Wormington Compressor Station. You’ll be the technical lead for Electrical, Instrumentation and Mechanical disciplines within your area, acting as a key point for works planning, escalation and ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient operations across our transmission assets.
This role will be primarily based at Wormington, with around 20–30% travel between Wormington and Felindra. The ideal candidate will live roughly north-west of Wormington to support travel requirements.
Wormington Compressor Station and local above ground Installations (AGIs) are some of the most critical operational sites within the UK’s Transmission Network. These sites will be undergoing major investment over the next 5 years, alongside our normal ‘business as usual’ operations. It’s an exciting time to be part of a team that, at certain times of the year, manages a third of the total gas injection into the UK’s transmission network.
Important: This is not an on-the-tools role. You’ll act as a technical authority and advisor on site, influencing all types of delivery works rather than performing hands-on maintenance, therefore experience in a leadership-style role with direct reports would be an advantage.
What You'll Be Doing
In this hands off but and impactful role, you will:
• Provide technical leadership and coaching to operational teams
• Act as Authorising Engineer for multi-discipline permits to work
• Conduct competency assessments and workplace evaluations
• Lead defect resolution and prioritise maintenance interventions
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and engineering standards
• Support design studies with technical input on safety, maintainability, and cost
• Participate in a 24/7 standby rota (mainly phone support) but act as Incident Controller during emergency situations.
About you
We’re looking for someone who has:
• Strong Electrical, Instrumentation and/or Mechanical engineering knowledge
• Experience working within a formal permit-to-work system
• Excellent project, planning and financial management skills
• A deep commitment to personal and process safety
• Ability to build strong relationships across internal and external stakeholders
• High standards of integrity and professionalism
• Knowledge of gas/oil industry, regulations and procedures – desirable
Key Requirements
• Time-served apprenticeship or recognised training scheme in Electrical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, Electronics or Control Systems
• HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline
• Degree in a relevant engineering subject – desirable
• IOSH Managing Safely certification – desirable
• DSEAR / Compex Trained – desirable
• Valid UK driving licence
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
