About the role
As a Senior Consents Officer, you’ll provide specialist expertise on planning and consents for one or more nationally significant infrastructure projects — including complex, multi‑year programmes such as Project Union East Coast.
You’ll operate at the centre of regulatory, environmental, and stakeholder interaction, helping to secure consents that are delivered on time, to specification and within cost. This is a role where expert judgement, stakeholder diplomacy and strategic thinking come together.
You’ll directly support the Senior Consents Manager in navigating challenging planning environments, delivering large‑scale DCO and planning applications, and ensuring National Gas maintains gold‑standard compliance across all consenting regimes.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll lead or support critical elements of the consents strategy, including:
- Securing project consents through best‑practice processes, strong documentation, and effective engagement with communities and statutory bodies.
- Applying expert knowledge across DCO, TCPA and Pipelines Act regimes to guide projects from early development through delivery.
- Advising project teams on design, development, consenting risks, and mitigation strategies.
- Monitoring programme, cost, risk and stakeholder implications, escalating issues early and proactively.
- Managing and challenging external suppliers, ensuring value for money and high-quality deliverables.
- Supporting resource planning within the team and helping onboard new team members.
- Representing National Gas at DCO hearings, stakeholder events and Public Inquiries.
- Ensuring all Consents, EIA and Consultation documents are produced to a professional standard and meet project deadlines.
- Working autonomously on routine issues while escalating complex matters appropriately.
- Developing your expertise to become a future leader in consents, environmental assessments and stakeholder management.
This is a fast‑paced, high‑impact position where your work directly enables the UK’s biggest and most ambitious energy transformation projects.
About you
You’re a confident, skilled planning and consents professional with a passion for major infrastructure delivery. You thrive in complex environments, managing multiple priorities while keeping stakeholders informed and engaged.
You combine technical expertise with strong communication, influencing and project management skills — and you excel in roles where collaboration, independence and forward‑thinking are essential.
Key Requirements & Experience
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring:
- Experience delivering project consents and EIA activities against programme, cost and specification.
- Strong working knowledge of planning regimes including the Town & Country Planning Act and the Planning Act 2008.
- Experience managing and challenging external specialists to deliver high‑quality consent and EIA outputs.
- Excellent understanding of consents, stakeholder management, land, and environmental assessment disciplines.
- Significant project management capability — including cost control, scheduling, scoping and procurement.
- Ability to work independently, escalate issues appropriately and maintain clear communication across teams.
- Outstanding communication and presentation skills, comfortable engaging diverse audiences.
- A collaborative mindset and ability to work across multi‑disciplinary project teams.
- A relevant degree (e.g., Planning, EIA, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture or Surveying).
- Chartered status or working towards it (MRTPI, MILA, MIEMA, MRICS) — or equivalent experience.
