About the role

Safety is at the heart of everything we do, and this role plays a vital part in making sure our construction and engineering projects are delivered safely, responsibly, and compliantly.

As Construction Safety Specialist, you'll provide expert guidance across the East region, helping project and operational teams manage risk, strengthen safety performance, and create environments where everyone goes home safe every day.

Why this role matters

The East region supports critical transmission infrastructure across compressor station sites, pipeline assets, and the Bacton gas terminal. As investment and project activity continue across the region, maintaining the highest standards of construction safety is essential to operational performance and long-term network reliability.

You'll be a trusted safety expert, working alongside project teams, engineers, contractors, and operational colleagues to influence decisions, prevent incidents, and build a positive safety culture. Your work will directly support safe project delivery, protect people, and help ensure our infrastructure continues to perform reliably for the communities and businesses that depend on it.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead construction safety assurance activities across projects and operational sites throughout the East Region
  • Provide expert advice on CDM compliance, risk management, and construction safety standards
  • Review construction documentation, including RAMS, lift plans, and temporary works arrangements
  • Identify risks, monitor compliance, and support teams to implement effective corrective actions
  • Support incident investigations, identify root causes, and share learning across the region
  • Influence contractors and project teams to strengthen safety behaviours and improve SHE performance
  • Deliver safety coaching, briefings, and improvement initiatives that reduce risk and drive operational excellence

What you'll bring

This role would suit someone who enjoys being out on site, influencing people at all levels, and making a visible difference to safety performance on complex engineering and construction activities.

Essential
  • Experience supporting construction projects within engineering, utilities, infrastructure, or major hazard environments
  • Strong working knowledge of CDM Regulations and construction safety management
  • Experience carrying out site inspections, audits, or safety assurance activities
  • Ability to assess risk and provide practical, proportionate safety advice
  • Experience investigating incidents and supporting the implementation of lessons learned
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the confidence to challenge constructively
  • NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, or equivalent recognised safety qualification
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable
  • Experience working on gas transmission, energy, process, or other regulated industrial sites
  • CDM 2015 training or qualification with a strong understanding of duty-holder responsibilities
  • Experience contributing to contractor management, tender reviews, or supplier assurance activities
  • Knowledge of HAZID, HAZCON, permit-to-work, or change management processes
  • Membership of IOSH, IIRSM, or a similar professional body

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit GOV.UK (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).
