About us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

We’re looking for a Gas Operations Cyber Technician to join our Operations team, supporting the security and resilience of the National Gas Transmission System. This is not a typical IT or corporate cyber role. This is a hands-on position working directly with Operational Technology (OT) assets that underpin the UK’s gas infrastructure.

You’ll be part of a team maintaining critical systems such as control systems, industrial PCs, firewalls, and managed switches across a variety of operational sites, from major gas terminals to smaller Above Ground Installations (AGI's). Your work will directly contribute to the cyber resilience of our gas operations, ensuring that essential infrastructure remains secure, compliant, and operational.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting routine cyber maintenance across operational gas sites
  • Backing up configurable OT devices and ensuring business continuity
  • Maintaining accurate asset data and managing access credentials securely
  • Carrying out upgrades to meet vulnerability management requirements
  • Securely disposing of retired OT assets
  • Assisting with malware sweeps and cyber incident investigations
  • Facilitating cyber assurance visits and supporting site access for upgrade projects
  • Keeping network drawings and asset records up to date
  • Participating in an on-call rota for key cyber functions
  • Collaborating closely with the central security team to ensure compliance and readiness

About you

You'll be a practical problem-solver with a methodical approach to your work and a strong sense of ownership. You'll be confident working independently and as part of a team, with the ability to organise, prioritise, and manage tasks effectively. Your attention to detail and analytical mindset will help you navigate challenges and contribute to the smooth running of operational environments. You'll bring a proactive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to maintaining high standards in everything you do.

Key requirements & experience

  • BTEC National Certificate (or equivalent City & Guilds, NVQ/SVQ Level 3) in an instrumentation or electrical/electronic engineering or cyber security discipline
  • Time-served apprenticeship (or other recognised training scheme) in an instrumentation or electrical/electronic engineering or cyber security discipline
  • Cyber security training - desirable
  • Experience in managing firewalls, managed switches etc. - desirable
  • Experience in taking operational technology backups - desirable
  • Experience in following maintenance work procedures for operational technology - desirable
  • Proven ability to complete maintenance on instrumentation, including organising, prioritising and scheduling of work assignments - desirable
  • Ability to analyse and solve problems relating to instrumentation and related disciplines - desirable
  • Demonstrate ability to correctly interpret engineering drawings - desirable
  • Full UK car driving licence
