About us

National Gas is securing Britain's energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

As Lead Corrosion Engineer, you'll act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for corrosion engineering within gas transmission. This role is pivotal in ensuring the integrity and reliability of assets by defining corrosion control strategies, overseeing cathodic protection (CP) design, paint and coating systems, and assessing material suitability against corrosion risks. You'll drive compliance with technical standards and legislation while adding value through design optimisation, innovation, and standardisation - always safeguarding safety, quality, and environmental requirements.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide specialist corrosion engineering expertise to capital projects and asset health programs.
  • Develop and review corrosion control strategies, including CP and coatings, for new and existing assets.
  • Lead the development and approval of CP designs, coating specifications, and corrosion risk assessments.
  • Provide specialist corrosion, cathodic protection, materials & inhibition engineering support to the regions operations and project teams.
  • Challenge and review design options at key investment milestones to ensure optimal corrosion management.
  • Conduct audits, incident investigations, and inspections to manage corrosion risk and ensure asset integrity.
  • Resolve corrosion-related technical queries and escalate issues where necessary.
  • Contribute to process safety assessments, quality and inspection activities, design reviews, and environmental assessments.
  • Support commercial activities by providing informed input for contracts, scopes, and tender evaluations.
  • Participate in internal/external working groups to develop and implement policies, procedures, and specifications.
  • Draft and maintain Gas Transmission procedures, specifications, and safety bulletins related to corrosion.
  • Develop investment strategies and scopes to support asset management plans.
  • Undertake medium-level, low-complexity G35 appraisals.
  • Provide input to inspection, testing, and commissioning activities, including validation surveys (CIPS, DCVG, AC monitoring).
  • Engage with external bodies (UKOPA, ICorr, AMPP) to align practices with industry standards.
  • Review and accept project documentation, commissioning, and handover records.
  • Drive continuous improvement using digital tools and data analytics for corrosion monitoring.
  • Act as a technical mentor to junior engineers and lead within the corrosion discipline.
  • Capture lessons learned and best practices to improve corrosion control solutions.
  • Ad-hoc technical support to other engineering activities.

About you

You'll be an experienced corrosion engineer with deep technical knowledge and a passion for asset integrity. You'll thrive on solving complex problems, influencing stakeholders, and driving continuous improvement. You'll have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, enabling you to engage effectively with internal teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies. You'll combine technical expertise with safety-by-design principles and a commitment to innovation.
