About the role
Join us at the forefront of delivering complex, large-scale programmes that keep the UK moving. As a Control & Instrumentation Design Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring our projects are safe, compliant, and delivered to the highest technical standards, right from concept through to commissioning.
This is a key position within our project delivery teams, acting as the technical backbone for C&I design. You’ll work closely with internal & external stakeholders and supply chain partners to ensure designs are robust, compliant, and aligned with programme expectations, helping us deliver safe, efficient and future-ready infrastructure.
What you'll be doing
- Acting as the C&I design subject matter expert within project teams, providing guidance and assurance throughout the design lifecycle
- Coordinating design deliverables, ensuring alignment with project schedules and critical milestones
- Supporting supply chain partners to achieve design acceptance in line with codes, standards, and specifications
- Leading and contributing to design reviews to ensure solutions meet scope, safety, and quality requirements
- Ensuring compliance with CDM, process safety, and environmental standards, including risk management and escalation
- Managing design data and documentation to maintain a robust, auditable quality assurance process
- Overseeing drawing, model, and document control processes, including BIM and technical compliance
- Supporting procurement activities through the development of technical and tender documentation
- Driving continuous improvement by contributing to policy, standards, and process development
- Coordinating technical queries, deviations, and change control processes across the project lifecycle
About you
You’re a collaborative and confident communicator who can influence and build strong relationships across diverse teams and stakeholders. With a proactive mindset, you balance technical expertise with commercial awareness to drive effective, practical design solutions.
Key requirements & experience
Essential:
- HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline
- Extensive experience in a design management or coordination role
- Experience in appropriately challenging contractors (technically)
- Experience with management of change process
- Strong knowledge of C&I systems, including PLC, SCADA, DCS and process control environments
- Understanding of CDM Regulations and Principal Designer responsibilities
- Familiarity with design assurance processes, including design approval and asset acceptance frameworks
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable:
- Professional accreditation (e.g. Incorporated or Chartered Engineer)
- Qualifications in NEBOSH, IOSH, auditing, or design/CDM management
- IEC 62443
- Experience working within major infrastructure, utilities, or regulated environments
- Knowledge of project lifecycle governance and stage gate processes
