Day Work Operative

About the role

 

We are seeking a Day Work Operative to support the safe and efficient operation of terminal assets through the delivery of day‑to‑day operational activities and delivery projects.


Working as part of a multidisciplinary operations team, this role provides hands‑on operational plant support to enable maintenance, commissioning, and project activity to be carried out safely and effectively. You will work closely with the Day Work Officer, contractors, and operational colleagues, playing a vital role in isolations, purging, gas testing, and Safe Control of Operations activities.


This is a practical, safety‑critical role with a strong development pathway, offering the opportunity to progressively build competence and authorisation levels within a regulated operational environment.


 
What You’ll Be Doing

 

  • Delivering day‑to‑day operational activities in support of terminal operations and asset health projects
  • Providing timely and accurate operational plant support to enable planned and reactive works
  • Carrying out isolations, de‑isolations, purging, commissioning support and atmospheric gas testing (subject to authorisation)
  • Supporting the safe issue and control of permits to work, ensuring hazards are clearly identified and controlled
  • Actively promoting a strong health and safety culture, challenging unsafe behaviours and supporting safe systems of work
  • Participating in daily HUB and operational planning meetings, providing input on plant status and work priorities
  • Performing Safe Control of Operations duties in line with individual competence and authorisation levels
  • Support site logistics and operational housekeeping activities, including the loading and unloading of goods using forklifts or telehandlers.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively with operational teams, supervisors and contractors
  • Maintaining flexibility to support changing operational demands, including varied duties and working patterns.
  • Participate in early morning gas testing rotation to allow for project permits to work to be issued on time.

Key requirements & experience

 

Essential:

 

  • ONC (National Certificate) or equivalent qualification, or demonstrable experience in a relevant trade discipline
  • Hands‑on experience in an operational, engineering, industrial, or asset‑based environment
  • Experience working within regulated environments with strong permit‑to‑work and safe systems of work processes
  • Working knowledge of health & safety principles, hazard identification and risk control
  • Strong practical skills and confidence using tools, plant, and operational equipment
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Basic IT skills to complete operational documentation and use site systems

 

Desirable:

 

  • Experience supporting maintenance, commissioning, or asset health delivery activities
  • Experience acting as a Competent Person or Permit Holder
