National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. Join us, and help be the energy behind the change.

About the role:

National Gas is undertaking a significant and varied programme of mechanical works across the Gas Transmission Network to help manage asset risk, meet future demand, support decarbonisation and comply with our regulatory obligations. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you’ll be at the heart of this transformation - providing expert technical support throughout the full lifecycle of complex projects, from early design through to construction, commissioning and handover.

You’ll work closely with project delivery teams, operations, system integrators and a range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure our mechanical assets - such as natural gas pipework, valves, actuators, pressure vessels and associated fittings - are designed, installed and maintained to the highest technical and safety standards. Your work will cover technical disciplines including fluid mechanics, pressure testing and drying, stress analysis, corrosion and defect assessment and noise and vibration management. You’ll also help ensure compliance with legislation and regulations such as the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR), the Pipelines Safety Regulations (PSR) and mechanical aspects of DSEAR.

This is a key role that contributes directly to the safety, reliability and performance of the gas transmission system. You’ll provide guidance on material selection, review and approve technical documentation and supplier data, respond to technical queries and take part in design reviews, inspections and formal process safety assessments. You’ll also help shape company policy and engineering standards by contributing to technical working groups and driving continuous improvement.

This is a great opportunity for a driven and experienced Mechanical Engineer looking to apply their expertise to high-impact national infrastructure projects, while developing their technical leadership within a dynamic and forward-looking organisation.

Travel will be part of the job – we have a national portfolio. You'll spend up to 25% of your working week travelling and working on sites/attending meetings to support in the delivery of the projects with home working in-between. Therefore, it’s essential you hold a full UK driving licence.

What we're looking for:

Essential -

  • Degree (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline
  • Professionally registered (IEng or CEng)
  • Incorporated and working towards chartership
  • Experience in the design, construction, maintenance, or operation of high-hazard plant, preferably in onshore gas transmission
  • Solid understanding of relevant regulations (e.g. PSSR, PSR, DSEAR), pressure systems, fluid mechanics, stress analysis and inspection processes

Desirable -

  • IOSH certification

What we can offer you:

Annual bonus of up to 6% based on personal and company performance
26 days’ holiday plus statutory holidays - option available to buy extra holiday days
