Join us and help be the energy behind the change.

National Gas is the backbone of Britain's energy system. We're responsible for securing the UK's energy, whilst leading the way to a net-zero future.

As the operator of Britain’s national gas transmission network, we repair and maintain gas pipelines, safely and reliably delivering gas to power stations, industries and 23 million homes.

Our skilled teams work to keep the gas flowing to our customers, generating power and helping to keep everyone connected.

At the same time, we’re pioneering new solutions like hydrogen transmission to help decarbonise energy, so our infrastructure continues to power the country as it transitions to net-zero.

As a graduate joining National Gas, it’s an inspiring environment where you know your work will directly contribute to keeping the nation’s energy secure today, whilst building a more sustainable, net-zero energy system for tomorrow.

About the role

Our Asset Graduates have a brilliant opportunity to work alongside experts, who every day, are shaping policy for National Gas.

The energy industry is changing, and our network needs to evolve to meet the challenge. We do this by ensuring that our company assets are adapted and maintained regularly to reflect the ever-evolving nature of the energy sector.

Our assets make sure that homes are heated, businesses are running, and power stations are able to generate. We have a greener future to plan for, environmental commitments to meet and hydrogen to think about. We have a duty to every bill payer to deliver this efficiently - managing our assets is critical to everybody in the UK.

The team are responsible for planning the lifecycle of our assets. From designing the network to decommissioning or repurposing an asset, they set asset management strategy, build our business plans and manage risk across the network.

This role is a unique blend of engineering, asset management and economic modelling which will put you at the centre of the complex decision making behind the UK’s gas transmission network.

During this 18-month programme, after your initial induction, you’ll complete three 6-month placements. This will cover all teams within the Asset business function, so that you can have exposure to different, yet relevant experiences and skillsets that will set you up for your career.

You'll have the opportunity to gain first-hand, on the ground experience whilst working within the Asset Team and be supported by industry specialists who come from a range of engineering disciplines. This insight will enable you to observe and understand any risks that might be associated with the development of our new Hydrogen and CO2 pipelines and how our engineering teams might best navigate this day to day.

About You

The Asset Management team is a dynamic, multidisciplinary team and you’ll learn a lot!

The most important part of the job is making the right decisions at the right time for the UK, so stakeholder engagement is key. For you to thrive as an Asset Management Graduate and get the most out of the scheme, you’ll need to be confident in engaging with people at various levels within the business, assimilating important information and relaying it to other stakeholders in accessible and relatable ways. You’ll work closely with experts across National Gas, and externally, gathering information and opinions to understand drivers for investment and make recommendations.

Every day, we solve complex problems. Your skills and knowledge will be developed to make structured, data-driven decisions, balancing cost, risk and benefit to determine the optimal solution. You’ll need to look at any problem with multiple lenses - asset management, engineering, commercial, regulatory and financial drivers will often compete for your focus, and you’ll need to prioritise effectively to manage these needs.

A strong desire to deepen understanding of the gas industry, combined with the confidence to question, challenge, and contribute to both established and emerging ideas and processes, will be vital as we continue to enhance and evolve the way we work. You‘ll need to create compelling business cases for approval, so strong technical writing is a great skill to have, as well as negotiating and influencing.

We celebrate the different experiences our colleagues bring to our organisation, and strongly encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.
