About us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

Are you ready to shape the future of the UK’s energy infrastructure? You’ll have the autonomy to make impactful decisions, work with a diverse range of stakeholders, and help shape plans that look a decade ahead. If you’re ready to make a real difference and help deliver the UK’s net-zero ambitions, we want to hear from you.

Our Asset Management Plan (AMP) is critical to transforming the UK’s gas infrastructure. In this role, you’ll be at the forefront, driving investment decisions that balance today’s needs with tomorrow’s opportunities, ensuring we deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions.

What you'll be doing

  • Turning strategy into action: Translate high-level objectives into robust, deliverable investment plans, especially supporting the hydrogen transition and future asset needs.
  • Making the case: Conduct whole-life cost analysis and provide engineering justification to underpin investment decisions and regulatory submissions.
  • Communicating with impact: Clearly and confidently present evidence-based investment decisions to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Driving improvement: Identify and deliver projects that elevate our Asset Management maturity, helping us stay ahead in a rapidly changing industry.

About you

We have the expertise and development focus, so you bring the 'soft skills' and we'll bring everything else.

Essential:

  • Strategic thinker: Able to see the big picture and make efficient investment decisions amid complex, sometimes conflicting requirements.
  • Collaborative partner: Skilled at building relationships and bringing together stakeholders across multiple disciplines to create a cohesive, optimised AMP.
  • Clear communicator: Confident in articulating and justifying decisions, and open to feedback to continually improve our approach.
  • Adaptable and agile: Comfortable balancing urgent priorities with long-term progress in a fast-moving environment.

Desirable:

  • Background in engineering and/or asset management.
  • Understanding of gas transmission plant and equipment.
  • Experience in regulated businesses.
  • Skills in investment and business case development (cost-benefit analysis, engineering justification).
  • Whole-life cost analysis and stakeholder management.
  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in a STEM subject.
