The Backup & Storage Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, and continuous improvement of secure, resilient backup and recovery solutions within the National Gas Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) and Enterprise environments - ensuring all data protection strategies meet stringent availability, integrity, and compliance requirements, with a primary focus on rapid, reliable backup and restore capabilities to support operational continuity in high-risk and highly regulated settings.
Operating within the Technology Infrastructure team and working closely with security, and application teams, the Backup & Storage Engineer ensures backup solutions are aligned with cyber resilience strategies, including protection against ransomware and data corruption. They implement immutable storage, air-gapped backups, and encryption controls to safeguard sensitive and operationally critical data assets.

Key Accountabilities:
- Management of CNI data storage platforms - to ensure availability, reliability, security and asset health of critical applications that support the safe operation of National Transmission System (NTS). The role holders will ensure 24/7 availability of this service (1 week in 2 on standby).
- System monitoring and optimisation - perform incident response and change management for efficiency and cost control.
- Management of all CNI and cloud backups. Identification of failures, execution of remediation and compliance with standards and policies.
- Enhancing Security - identification and remediation of potential issues. Collaboration with Security Teams to ensure compliance with security KPIs and operational outputs.
- Ownership of project deliverables, related change/incident tickets to meet timelines, KPIs and SLAs.
- Management of CNI data vaults and backup media. Provision of immutable storage to remediate potential cyber risks to SCADA is essential. Performing confirmation and validation exercises to assure data security and availability.
- Perform Disaster Recovery exercises and collaborate in the development of Testing Strategies.
About you:
We’re looking for someone proven experience as a Backup and Storage Administrator or similar role with CNI responsibility.
Knowledge:
- Advanced specialist knowledge of Storage and Backup platforms in both an on-premis air gapped Critical National Infrastructure and cloud setting.
- Knowledge of CNI Key Performance Indicators and established best practises, required to deliver world class results.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with project teams, service owners, and other stakeholders.
- Familiarity with Project Delivery and Continuous Improvement methods and processes.
- Knowledge of the Cyber Assessment Framework and Audit Assessments (e.g ISO27001).
Skills:
- Strong Windows and Linux Skills.
- Proficiency with Automation Tools (e.g Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation)
- Ability to perform Performance Tuning, Right Sizing and Disaster Recovery
- Excellent communication skills to convey complex transition plans and updates to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to deploy and manage containerised workloads.
Qualifications:
- Relevant Certification for either Storage or Backup Technologies e.g. CCPP, Managing Alletra, etc
- Bachelor's degree in relevant subject or equivalent Technology experience.
- ITILv4 Foundation Certificate.

- Standard working week: 37 hours Monday-Friday
- Standby on-call rota 1 week in every 2: as part of a team to cover 24/7/365 – £587 per week.
