About us:

At National Gas, the work we do matters.

As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.

Join us and help secure Britain's energy.

About the role:

We're looking for a Control Room Manager to lead the safe, secure and efficient real-time operation of the National Transmission System (NTS), ensuring the continued delivery of critical energy infrastructure across Great Britain.

This is a pivotal leadership role within our Gas System Operator function, responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the NTS on a 24/7 basis. As one of the most senior operational leaders in the organisation, you'll make critical real-time decisions that support energy security, customer requirements and business performance.

Beyond day-to-day operations, you'll help shape the future of the control room by leading change programmes, strengthening operational resilience, developing high-performing teams and influencing the systems, processes and capabilities needed for long-term success.

What you'll be doing:

  • Leading the safe, secure and efficient real-time operation of the National Transmission System, ensuring compliance with all safety, regulatory and commercial obligations.

  • Optimising real-time delivery of capital and maintenance plans while maintaining reliable network performance for customers.

  • Creating an environment where teams can make confident, auditable operational decisions during both normal operations and major incidents.

  • Leading and embedding change programmes affecting control room people, processes, systems and working practices.

  • Driving a strong safety culture and fostering continuous learning from incidents, near misses and operational events.

  • Ensuring control room readiness and resilience during emergency situations and business continuity events.

  • Representing National Gas with regulators, government agencies, customers, industry bodies and emergency responders following notable operational events.

What you'll bring:

Essential:

  • Proven leadership experience within a complex operational environment.

  • Experience building high-performing, engaged teams and creating a psychologically safe culture.

  • Demonstrable success leading and delivering operational change programmes.

  • Experience operating within a regulated industry or environment.

  • Experience managing incidents, emergencies and/or business continuity arrangements.

  • Strong commercial awareness and sound decision-making capability.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels.

Desirable:

  • Degree qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent industry experience.

  • Experience within energy, utilities, transmission networks or other critical infrastructure environments.

  • Knowledge of gas transmission, energy operations or system operations.

  • Experience engaging with regulators, government agencies or external industry stakeholders.

Security clearance:

This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV). Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain Security Clearance (SC) throughout their employment. For further information, visit www.gov.uk (UK Security Vetting: Clearance Levels).

What we offer:

  • Market-leading double-match pension (up to 12% company contribution)

  • Annual performance bonus up to 20%

  • Company car or cash alternative

  • Private medical insurance for you, with the option to purchase additional cover

  • 28 days holiday (plus statutory holidays)

  • 10x salary life assurance and income protection

  • Flexible opt-in benefits

  • Family-friendly policies, wellbeing support, and professional development opportunities

Inclusive recruitment:

We're building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve, championing diversity, and creating an inclusive workplace where everyone is valued for their unique contribution. We support reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and beyond.
