System Operations is responsible for operating, controlling and monitoring the Gas National Transmission System in real time, making gas available when and where our customers across Great Britain need it playing an essential role in keeping Britain’s homes warm and its industry moving. We also facilitate the efficient operation of the GB gas market.

About the role

Are you ready to take the helm of the National Transmission System, the powerhouse behind 60% of GB's electricity generation? Imagine leading a team that provides energy to 24 million households and over 500,000 businesses all-day, every-day!
 
As the Head of National Control, you will be at the forefront of our real-time operational function, overseeing the control room, managing critical systems, and ensuring seamless operation across systems, people, and facilities. 
 
Your leadership will be crucial during incident and emergency scenarios, providing calm and decisive incident response management and concise briefings for senior internal and external stakeholders.

Maximize Network Efficiency: Balance network risk to deliver operational Capex while optimising the System Operator incentive income.
Continuity Assurance: Ensure robust plans are in place for safe gas network operation whatever the scenario.
Compliance & Security: Maintain control centres in line with legislation, industry standards, and evolving security requirements.
System Maintenance: Collaborate with Technology to ensure critical operational systems are maintained and optimised to achieve the highest standards of availability and uptime.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Foster strong relationships with national stakeholders, including government bodies and regulators.
Team Leadership: Lead and develop a team of c70, promoting a culture of high performance, safety, and continuous improvement.
Operational Excellence: Drive continuous improvement of operational and commercial processes within the control room.
Performance Monitoring: Set clear goals, provide coaching, and monitor performance to ensure team success.
Budget Management: Develop and manage a significant multi-million-pound budget for National Control.
 
You will be part of a management standby rota where you will be an escalation point for the 24/7 operation National Gas runs alongside your peers on the Energy Delivery Leadership Team.

What we are looking for

Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of a field within critical infrastructure and being a member of a professional body.
Industry Experience: At least a Gas Transmission awareness when coupled with a background in the broader Utilities.
Leadership: Proven experience leading large multidisciplinary teams with a focus on talent development and high performance.
Financial Acumen: Ability to manage large budgets and oversee financial planning.
Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with regulatory frameworks governing gas transmission, including safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Crisis Management: Expertise in emergency preparedness and response planning.
Stakeholder Engagement: Strong people skills with experience collaborating with government authorities, regulators, and customers.
Problem-Solving & Innovation: Ability to identify operational risks and implement innovative solutions to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
