About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
National Gas is investing in pioneering projects such as Project Union and East Coast Hydrogen, major initiatives that will help unlock a decarbonised, hydrogen‑powered future.
As a Hydrogen Design Assurance Engineer, you’ll sit at the heart of these programmes, ensuring that innovative, safe and sustainable engineering designs come together seamlessly across multiple disciplines and partners.
Your work will directly shape the first hydrogen transmission infrastructure in the UK, setting new technical standards, solving engineering challenges, and ensuring designs meet the highest levels of safety, quality and environmental performance.
What you'll be doing
- You will be a central link between project teams, contractors, technical specialists and regulators.
- Lead the coordination of multidisciplinary engineering designs across EC&I, process, civil and mechanical disciplines.
- Act as the technical design focal point for Project Managers, ensuring design activities align with project scope, National Gas standards and evolving hydrogen technical requirements.
- Drive progress against design schedules, managing dependencies and ensuring design outputs meet safety, sustainability and Net Zero objectives.
- Oversee compliance with CDM regulations, process safety assessments and Principal Designer responsibilities.
- Manage design approvals, technical queries, deviations, and design change control procedures.
- Facilitate design reviews and ensure robust quality assurance of drawings, 3D models and BIM processes.
- Collaborate with environmental and consents specialists to ensure design solutions reflect environmental assessments and sustainability commitments.
- Identify, analyse and resolve design risks and conflicts early, supporting timely decision‑making across a complex programme portfolio.
About you
You’re a confident communicator who can build relationships quickly, influence others, and bring people together around clear design expectations. You thrive in complex environments, stay calm under pressure, and enjoy solving challenging technical problems with a practical, collaborative mindset.
