As an IT Programme Manager at National Gas, you will lead the successful delivery of high‑value, multi‑year programmes across Technology. You will oversee complex interdependent projects spanning infrastructure, applications, data, security, and emerging technologies.
Accountable for programme governance, budget stewardship, benefits realisation, risk and issue management, and executive‑level stakeholder engagement, this role requires proven experience operating in large fast‑paced environments, coordinating cross‑functional teams, and ensuring alignment to organisational strategy.

Key accountabilities:
Programme Leadership & Delivery:
- Own end‑to‑end delivery of complex IT programmes ensuring alignment with business and technology strategy.
- Establish and lead programme governance structures: Boards, Steering Groups, Working Groups.
- Define programme roadmap, scope, dependencies, deliverables, benefits profile, and acceptance criteria.
- Ensure effective integration of multiple workstreams, managing cross‑programme dependencies.
Planning, Financials & Controls:
- Develop and maintain programme plans, RAID, status reporting, resource forecasts, cost models, and financial tracking.
- Control multi‑million‑pound budgets, ensuring compliance with financial governance.
Risk, Issue & Change Leadership:
- Identify and manage risks, issues, and changes at programme scale; escalate appropriately.
- Lead impact assessments across technology, business, and vendor landscapes.
Stakeholder & Supplier Management:
- Engage senior leadership, C‑suite, and cross‑functional stakeholders, ensuring clear and timely communication
- Manage strategic vendors, ensuring delivery outcomes, performance, and commercial alignment.
People Leadership:
- Provide coaching, direction, and support to Project Managers, Scrum Masters, Analysts, and cross‑functional delivery teams
- Support capability uplift across the PMO and Delivery teams
About you:
- Degree qualified or substantial relevant experience
- Extensive experience delivering large‑scale IT programmes within complex organisations.
- Demonstrable leadership across diverse project portfolios and methodologies (Waterfall, Agile, hybrid).
- Strong financial management of multi‑million‑pound budgets.
- Proven track record influencing senior executives and Boards.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams and conflicting priorities in fast‑paced environments.
Desirable:
- Experience in a regulated utilities sector.
- Advanced knowledge of planning and performance methodologies (e.g. CPM – Critical Path method; EVM – Earned Value Management).
- Experience with enterprise portfolio management tools (e.g. MS Project Online).
- Experience presenting at executive steering groups.
- Professional certifications: MSP (Managing Successful Programmes), Association for Project Management (APM PMQ/PPQ), PMP (Project Management Professional), SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library).
