Join us and help be the energy behind the change.

National Gas is the backbone of Britain’s energy system. We keep gas moving safely and reliably to power stations, industry and over 23 million homes, while also leading the way towards a cleaner, net zero future. As the UK’s energy system becomes more digital and more connected, protecting it has never been more important.

Physical Security plays a vital role in keeping the lights on and the gas flowing, protecting the physical, corporate and digital systems that keep people warm and safe. As an Apprentice in our Physical Security team, you’ll be based in our Warwick office and will work across areas that help keep our people, systems and data safe.

You’ll learn how we defend our organisation from cyber threats and gain exposure to both technical security and real world protective work across the business.

What you’ll be doing

As a Physical Security Apprentice at National Gas, you’ll combine hands on, practical experience with dedicated training to build the skills you need for a successful career in professional security.

You’ll be part of our Physical Security team, working alongside skilled security professionals who protect our people, sites and critical national infrastructure. You’ll learn how we safeguard everything from our physical buildings and operational sites to the systems and processes that keep gas flowing across the country.

Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll be fully immersed in the day to day running of our Security function. You’ll support real security operations, gaining experience in activities such as responding to alarms and incidents, understanding how control room operations work, monitoring access to sites, and applying security procedures that help keep our organisation safe. You’ll collaborate with colleagues across the business, seeing first-hand how physical security plays a vital role in maintaining the UK’s energy resilience.

Alongside your on the job learning, you’ll study towards your Level 2 Professional Security Operative qualification, developing key skills such as situational awareness, incident response, decision making under pressure and effective communication. This apprenticeship gives you a strong foundation for a long term career in a fast paced and essential area of the energy industry.

Throughout the programme, you’ll receive regular support, guidance and feedback to help you grow in confidence. You’ll follow a personalised development plan, ensuring you build experience at a pace that works for you. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the practical skills, professional knowledge and recognised qualification you need to progress in the security profession.

About You

This apprenticeship is ideal for someone motivated, curious and ready to learn. You don’t need previous security experience, just an interest in how professional security works and the enthusiasm to get involved. In our fast paced control room environment, you’ll help respond to alarms and incidents, so being able to stay calm, multitask and solve problems will really help you thrive.

You’ll work with colleagues across the organisation, so good communication, teamwork and the confidence to ask questions are important. Because you’ll handle sensitive information, professionalism, discretion and reliability are essential. Above all, you should be willing to learn, take ownership of your work and bring a positive attitude to every situation.

By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have gained the skills, experience and Level 2 Professional Security Operative qualification you need to start your career in the security industry.

  • A cover letter is essential to help us understand why you're a great fit for the role. Check out our guidance below!
  • As part of our Hybrid working approach, your time will be split between office days (primarily at the Warwick Head Office) and working from home.
