About the role
Every day, millions of people rely on the safe and reliable transportation of gas across the UK. As a Mechanical Engineer for Above Ground Installation (AGI's) Assets, you’ll play a critical role in protecting and enhancing that infrastructure, providing specialist mechanical engineering expertise that directly supports the integrity, safety and performance of our Above Ground Installations.
What you'll be doing
- Provide specialist mechanical engineering advice on AGI assets to the wider Gas Transmission business
- Support Regional Delivery teams by delivering a high-quality operational support service
- Develop, monitor and maintain KPIs for AGI mechanical assets
- Advise on the resolution of mechanical faults, defects and asset integrity issues
- Support and influence engineering changes that deliver safe, efficient and value-driven outcomes
- Carry out audits, incident investigations and detailed inspections to identify risk and create improvement opportunities
- Produce clear, high-quality reports and data to inform asset management and investment decisions
- Develop investment strategies and scopes that support long-term asset management plans
- Lead the development and continual improvement of engineering procedures, specifications and safety instructions for AGI plant and equipment
- Engage with OEMs, regulators and industry bodies to align internal standards with best practice
- Take part in a standby rota as a Mechanical Damage Assessor (training provided)
About you
You’re a confident and credible engineering professional who can build effective relationships quickly across technical and non-technical audiences. Calm under pressure and solutions-focused, you combine strong judgement with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.
Key requirements & experience
Essential:
- Experience in operational or technical asset management within gas transmission, petrochemical or similar asset-intensive environments
- Proven capability in managing complex technical issues and engineering risk
- Experience contributing to policy, specification or procedural development
- Strong influencing, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills
- Track record of building effective working relationships across all organisational levels
- Broad mechanical engineering experience, with exposure to pressure control systems
- Strong working knowledge of safety management systems in regulated environments
Desirable:
- Involvement in audits, incident investigations or regulatory engagement (e.g. HSE)
- CompEx 11
- Experience supporting or leading innovation or asset improvement projects
- Willingness to develop into a Subject Matter Expert role over time
