About us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About the role

If you’re excited by the challenge of ensuring the UK’s energy is accurately measured, safely transported, and ready for a low‑carbon future, this role is your opportunity to make a real impact.

As a Metering Engineer, you'll play a crucial part in maintaining the integrity of our metering systems and supporting the transition to hydrogen and carbon‑capture technologies. Metering is at the heart of how we understand, manage, and account for the gas flowing across the National Transmission System.

What you'll be doing

  • Provide expert engineering guidance on metering systems including flow measurement, gas composition and energy calculations.
  • Work collaboratively with suppliers, system integrators, operations and delivery teams to solve complex engineering challenges.
  • Ensure our systems meet all legislation, industry codes, standards and National Gas specifications.
  • Support operational teams to maintain metering system accuracy, reliability and performance.
  • Contribute to commercial activities such as scopes, tenders, contracts and supplier evaluations.
  • Participate in industry and internal working groups to develop and implement new policies and standards.
  • Identify best practices, lessons learned and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Support the development of metering solutions for hydrogen and CO₂ applications as part of the UK’s energy transition.

About you

You’re curious, collaborative and confident engaging with a wide range of technical and non‑technical stakeholders. You bring strong problem‑solving skills and an ability to translate engineering insight into practical, reliable solutions.

Key requirements & experience

Essential:

  • HNC or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience with analytical systems and instrumentation.
  • Background in design, construction or maintenance on a similar industry.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical standards.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Full UK driving licence - you will be traveling and staying away as part of the UK-wide portfolio of assets

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. Many of the positions within our company are subject to national security clearance and Trade Control restrictions. This means that your eligibility for certain roles may be affected by your place of birth, nationality, current or former citizenship, and any residency you hold or have held.
