About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
Join National Gas as a Senior Pipeline Mechanical Engineer and play a pivotal role in securing Britain’s energy and driving the transition to a cleaner, greener future. You’ll be at the heart of major hydrogen projects like Project Union and East Coast Hydrogen, helping to decarbonise the UK’s energy system and power millions of homes and businesses.
As a Senior Pipeline Mechanical Engineer, you’ll provide technical expertise, assurance, and leadership in the design, modification, and integrity assessment of gas transmission pipelines. Your work will ensure our network remains safe, reliable, and efficient, supporting the UK’s journey to net zero and maintaining our industrial competitiveness.
What you'll be doing
- Acting as the technical authority for pipeline engineering, ensuring designs meet the highest standards and regulatory requirements.
- Reviewing and approving mechanical and pipeline design submissions across all project stages—from concept to commissioning.
- Providing expert input for new high-pressure pipelines and modifications to existing systems, including connections, crossings, and reroutes.
- Evaluating mechanical integrity, wall thickness, pressure containment, stress analysis, and material selection.
- Conducting and reviewing route optioneering and pipeline alignment studies, considering constructability, land constraints, and operational risks.
- Supporting and reviewing design documentation, including alignment sheets, pipeline calculations, and valve station designs.
- Leading or contributing to risk assessments, HAZOPs, constructability reviews, and design assurance workshops.
- Ensuring integration of pipeline design with related systems (AGIs, pigging facilities, valves, CP systems, geotechnical interfaces).
- Collaborating with land, civil, process, and control teams to deliver holistic engineering solutions.
About you
You’re a confident communicator and a natural collaborator, able to translate complex engineering concepts into clear language for both technical and non-specialist stakeholders. Your proactive approach and commitment to continuous improvement will help drive engineering excellence across our pipeline projects.

- Working knowledge of relevant UK and international codes and standards (IGEM/TD/1, PD8010, ASME B31.8, API, ISO).
- Understanding of UK regulations (Gas Safety, Pipelines Safety, COMAH, CDM).
- Experience with design software/tools for stress analysis, alignment sheets, and material specification.
- Familiarity with pigging operations, pipeline inspection, and pressure testing.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
Desirable:
- Experience mentoring or coaching colleagues.
