About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
As a Senior Process Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in shaping the technical integrity of some of the UK’s most significant energy transformation programmes. Operating as part of the Design Authority within our Net Zero portfolio, you’ll provide expert process engineering leadership and assurance to ensure our new and repurposed assets are safe, compliant and fit for the future.
You’ll support flagship hydrogen initiatives such as Project Union and East Coast Hydrogen, helping convert existing infrastructure into a low‑carbon energy network that will support the UK’s decarbonisation ambitions for decades to come.
What you'll be doing
- Acting as the process engineering technical authority for assigned projects and assets, ensuring designs meet internal standards, regulatory obligations and industry best practice.
- Reviewing, verifying and approving process engineering deliverables produced by internal teams and external design houses.
- Providing technical assurance across concept, FEED, detailed design, construction and commissioning phases.
- Approving process calculations and documentation, including line sizing, pressure drop, heat and mass balances, relief and blowdown design, valve sizing and process datasheets.
- Leading the development and application of corporate process engineering standards, particularly for hydrogen systems.
- Developing and reviewing key process documents such as PFDs, P&IDs, control and operating philosophies, simulations and basis of design reports.
- Collaborating closely with projects, operations, safety specialists and regulators to deliver robust, fit‑for‑purpose solutions.
- Capturing lessons learned from operational feedback and embedding them into future designs.
About you
You’re a confident, technically credible process engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and influencing decisions in high‑stakes environments. You communicate with clarity, build trust quickly with stakeholders, and take ownership for delivering safe, compliant and high‑quality engineering outcomes.
