System Operations is responsible for operating, controlling and monitoring the Gas National Transmission System in real time, making gas available when and where our customers across Great Britain need it playing an essential role in keeping Britain’s homes warm and its industry moving. We also facilitate the efficient operation of the GB gas market.

About the role

As a Strategy & Assurance Specialist within National Gas, you’ll play a pivotal role in strengthening our operational assurance whilst ensuring strategic direction in line with central security. Sitting at the heart of System Operations, you’ll help ensure our systems, policies, and practices are aligned with security policies/standards and regulatory expectations.

You’ll lead assurance activities that support our strategic goals, working closely with the central security team and key stakeholders to support compliance with the Network Information System (NIS) Regulations and the Cyber Assessment Framework (CAF). Your work will directly contribute to the resilience and security of the UK’s gas transmission network.

You’ll develop and lead a programme of assurance activities across the System Operator function, ensuring alignment with internal security policies and external regulatory requirements. You’ll manage actions from audits, inspections, and assurance reviews, providing timely updates to senior leaders.

You’ll also shape internal policies and procedures in line with standards such as ISO27001 and IEC 62443, ensuring they reflect best practices and evolving security requirements. Your work will help embed a culture of cyber awareness across the directorate.

Collaboration is key. You’ll work with stakeholders across National Gas as well as external bodies like HSE, Ofgem and the NCSC (via Security), to ensure our assurance activities are coordinated, effective, and future ready.

What we are looking for

To be successful in this role, you'll be a strategic thinker with a strong background in assurance. You have experience implementing assurance frameworks in large, complex organisations and are confident working across multiple stakeholder groups.

You bring strong knowledge of cyber security frameworks (e.g. NIST, CAF) and have a structured, analytical approach to problem solving. You’re also a strong communicator, capable of influencing at all levels and building effective relationships across technical and operational teams.
