About us
National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.
About the role
If you’re excited by the idea of working at the heart of the UK’s critical national infrastructure, designing, protecting and improving the systems that keep our gas network safe, reliable and future‑ready, this could be the role for you.
As a Telemetry Engineer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the performance, safety and cyber security of the telemetry, control and instrumentation systems that underpin National Gas operations. Your expertise will help keep essential assets operating safely and efficiently, supporting everything from day‑to‑day operations to long‑term strategy and innovation.
What you'll be doing
- You’ll be our go‑to specialist for telemetry and control systems across the asset lifecycle, contributing to design, delivery and operational performance.
- Act as asset owner, coordinating and resolving technical issues across telemetry and cyber‑secure communication systems.
- Lead and support commissioning, testing, configuration and fault‑finding activities.
- Provide quality assurance and design oversight through all delivery phases.
- Work closely with operations teams to maintain system availability and reliability.
- Participate in safety assessments, design reviews, inspections and Factory/ Site Acceptance Testing (FAT/SAT).
- Contribute to the development of engineering strategies, standards, specifications and policies.
- Support audits, inspections and Quality Management System (QMS) implementation.
- Provide technical input into scopes, tenders, and risk assessments.
About you
You’re naturally collaborative, curious and confident working with technical and non‑technical stakeholders alike. You thrive in environments where problem‑solving, continuous improvement and strong engineering judgement really make a difference.
Key requirements & experience
Essential:
- HNC or degree in an engineering discipline.
- Experience working in complex or safety‑critical environments.
- Strong knowledge of telemetry, control, instrumentation or SCADA systems.
- Understanding of fire and gas detection, hazardous areas, DSEAR, and relevant standards (such as IEC 60079, 61511, 62443).
- Experience supporting operational teams and working with cross‑functional stakeholders.
- Background in design, construction or maintenance on a similar industry.
- Full UK driving licence - you will be traveling and staying away as part of the UK-wide portfolio of assets
